Honda has canceled plans for the Acura NSX supercar program, company President Takeo Fukui said on Wednesday.

The car was expected to have a front-mounted V10 engine that made at least 500 hp. It would have been the successor to the first-generation NSX, which had a mid-mounted V6. That NSX went out of production in late 2005 after 14 years.

The new NSX was expected to debut as a 2010 model.

The news came as Honda announced sweeping cutbacks as it deals with the global sales downturn and economic crunch.

It's a shame but considering the current economic situation comes as no surprise. I am hoping that, with car sales in the tank and the Fed recently lowering the interest rate, I can get a good deal on a new Odyssey for my wife at 0% interest at some point.

That's a shame, would like to have seen what the performance would have been like considering how well the S2000 performs.

Getting out of F1 is understandable, but dropping the NSX after all the money put into the program with the launch about a year away is quite a shock. I hope it's only temporary and when things turn around they'll make it even better!

I hope that Honda will at least put some of the technology planned for the new "NSX" into other Acuras. I can't imagine all that time, R&D, and money going to waste.

I find that pretty surprising actually. I understand cutting back, but this was a benchmark/defining project.

Hopefully they'll pick it back up when things look better.
