Im a proud owner of an '12 shawd with a full exhaust upgrade.


My question:

Why do other car manufactures like Audi,BMW,lexus etc manage to sound like they have manual transmissions when in fact they are AT in S mode.

When im using the paddle shifters it sound great when downshifting, but when im going threw the gears you can tell its an AT because of the hesitation in between gears.

In a recent local meet a g37 was pulling up and from a distance a couple of the people thought it had a MT and when he got closer we realized it was automatic.

Someone stated BMW come with smg(sport manuel gearbox),and thats why they manage to sound like they a Mt,IS THIS TRUE?

Mainly it's because Audi and BMW have better auto trans than Acura. BMW doesn't use SMG anymore - that was the last generation - I'm not sure what's it called now - but probably some dual clutch setup.

That's what its called the 7DCT. 7 speed dual clutch transmission. It the fasted gearbox that BMW offers but only available on some US models like the Z4, 335IS & M3. Might also be available on the new M5.

Its also said that the standard type 8spd auto in the rest of the cars is among the quickest autos available.

No wonder Honda is outsourcing it's rumored upcoming 9-speed auto box to ZF.

There is just no way Honda's in-house tranny development can catch up to the advanced trannies from the top auto makers.
