Dealer quoted me $400+ for the A12 service. It consisted of an oil change, tire rotation, filters, transmission flush, the multipoint inspection.

that's insane.

A=oil change ($45 with dino, $70 for synthetic)
1= tire rotation ($25)
2= fliter change (DIY spend $40 for both filters)

your car did not call for a tranny flush as indicated by MID 3.

a normal A12 would only cost about $200 or so (still a rip off, but less than what you paid). an A service will cost about $120 add $30 for the 1 and about $150 for the 2.

semantics will play a huge role in how much you pay at the dealer. had you asked for only an oil change and tire rotation you would have spent $100 max with synthetic oil and $70-75 with dino. DIY the filters (really, it's pretty easy and about 10 minutes of your time MAX). the labor rate for the filters is ridiculously expensive.

 

Agreed...$400 is insane. I took my car in 2 weeks ago because my A12 indicator went off. Dealership quoted me $280 for it. Told them to skip the "2" service and total came out to be $88. I purchased filters online and spent 15 minutes swapping them out. The only tool you need is a screwdriver. Save your money!!!

 

I recently paid 175 for an oil change, tranny flush, tire rotation and engine air filter. I had that slightly ripped off feeling I always get from auto service.

Cabin air filter takes 5min to swap and costs $15 on amazon for a premium charcoal enhanced filter.

 

lol thats a great deal.....compared to Canadian prices the dealer wanted 340 for trans flush. Most transmission shops charge 250+ for the flush alone

 

sorry to bring up an old thread but all of you are nuts for spending a dime on the dealer for this stuff.

Oil change Mobil 1 with Honda oil filter and crush washer- $45
4 quarts of Honda ATF and 2 tranny washers- $30
cabin and air filters from Honda- $30

That's $105 in OEM parts which can all be done in less than half hour. If you can change your tire on the side of the road you can change all of this stuff on your own. Next time my TL see's a dealer is when the tranny starts to crap itself

 

^^^ Agreed, but some people would rather not deal with it and just pay someone else to do it...though they should not be doing it at a dealership!

I actually enjoy doing maintenance on my car and look forward to the MID notification. So far I've changed the oil, rear diff fluid, and MTF...all of which were very easy to do. Of course those went along with tire rotations and filter changes. I also do the maintenace on my wife's Pilot.

 

 

Not only that, having the place to work and the cost of tools involved. Floor jack and torque wrenches are not necessarily cheap. Even at HF, you will probably spend close to a $100 on these 2 items alone. Now if you get quality stuff... probably looking close $300 if not more.

This is obvious but in the long run... you will save by doing DIY

 

^Good tools last a lifetime. At my age, I own them all. I hate crawling under the car, but it saves me sooooo much money.

 

No doubt... just picked up some tools for DIY not too long ago.
Despite the amount of money you save... I think one would need some sort of passion towards cars or just have that pride of ownership to DIY.

My MID is showing 40% oil life right now and I am dying for SERVICE DUE SOON light to come on

for those that don't want to hassle with DIY, the cost for an oil change at a dealer vs a quick lube place is not that big of a difference.

i've seen receipts in a friend's car for jiffy lube...they charge $45 for an oil change. my dealer charges $42, bring your own oil and labor is $25. add a coupon it drops to $35. personally i would trust the dealer techs a bit more (all they see are acuras and few hondas-yes one in the same) than some quick lube guy that pokes around under everything under the sun trying to figure out where the drain plug to the car is.

just go to whoever you trust with your car in terms of it's maintenance whether it's you (DIY), the dealer or some indy place. i have a good relationship with my dealer and i value that relationship. it's a matter of what it's worth to you (as with anything you may purchase or use as a consumer).

 

Yeah, I do my own maintenace because I enjoy it...not just to save a few bucks. I also baby my car a lot and prefer no one else's hands on her but mine

I find myself accumulating more and more tools from DIY's. I bought a bottle pump for the rear diff fluid change, a breaker bar and set of extensions for the MTF change, etc. The nice thing is I'm still saving money over paying a shop to do the work and as Mr. Marco said...tools last a lifetime. I actually just took the next step on Black Friday and bought an 11-drawer tool cart as well as a creeper. I'm looking forward to getting more organized and being more comfortable while under the car.

 

^^ if i had the energy and the patience and the space to do stuff....and a little more confidence in terms of knowing what the hell i was doing...then it certainly would be worth it.

i enjoy detailing my cars... tinkering under the hood...might annoy me. i've accumulated in a few tools myself, but nothing beyond basic stuff. i actually have a floor jack and jack stands!

 

Most of my random tools come from DIY's. I think its the best feeling when you do something to the car yourself and take it out for a spin.

 

it is great when you enjoy what you are doing. I have many things I love to do but doing maintenance on my car is NOT on that list. I love to wash it, know how to check the oil, change a flat tire, check the tire pressure. Have all service done, including the filters, by the dealer. If you saw my service receipts it is worth it, to me IMO.I schedule the service so I can meet friends at the nearby restaurant for lunch. I have a garage full of tools, and other gadgets left to me from my late husband. Gave a lot of them away but still have lots more.
