2014 Acura TL SH-AWD Fishtailing
 

Folks:

I just bought a used 2014 Acura TL SH-AWD. I like the car, but today the weather was cold and the streets were covered in a little bit of salt, There was no ice or snow. Whenever I turned quickly to the left, the car fishtailed. I am talking about 25 degrees to 30 degrees from normal. When I turned hard into a right turn, the car snow-plowed even more dangerously than my old FWD Fusion. The tire are solid (Michelin Primacy, relatively new).. The car light does not show if the nannies are on or not, but this happened both before and after I pushed the nanny button. Any suggestions? I didn't look during more rigorous driving, but I do note,that, while viewing the Information system, the 4WD indicator seems to show that the system kicks into the proper wheel when needed.

I thank you for your interest in helping. Where do I find the date code. I see a USDT NO. Is that what you are talking about?

Besides the OEM Michelins not being great on wet roads, in my experience the SHAWD is sensitive to tread depth differences between front and rear tires on wet pavement.

Some proper winter tires will help, especially when the roads are freezing cold.

My car does the same thing no big deal 2013 acura tl shawd.

SH-AWD will add power to the outer wheel when it detects you are turning in a curve and have added gas (acceleration) to speed the car up to induce oversteer AKA fishtailing.

You are either turning the wheel quite (steering angle sensor thinks you are in a curve then) a bit or getting a bit too much on the gas for the situation. If the later is the case, you'll need better tires. The Michelins are far from snow/cold oriented and won't grip as well when it's cold outside + snow on the ground.

It's all in the tires!

My RDX will fishtail on ice by itself, nearly! I have awful tires, though


If I turn hard and throttle it will go tail out on wet roads too!


Here's a though! Turn off VSA, put it in 2nd gear, go half way through a tight corner, then floor it, be prepared!!!! That's the SH-AWD at work! But in my experience, SH-AWD makes the cars tail happy!

You should definitely confirm that your tires are fresh and have adequate tread depth. You can get a tire tread gauge or you can google guides on how to do it by comparing to features on a penny.

If you don't find anything alarming in the tires, you should check the alignment of the car. Having different behavior in left turns than right turns could be caused by a large pothole or some other bump.

SH-AWD will rotate the rear end in a turn when you:

1. Turn in without overdriving/skidding the front tires.

2. Add throttle while the wheel is turned.

If you don't do step 1 correctly then traction control will not allow you to add the throttle in step 2.
