2013 SHAWD 6MT Cam Lobe worm at 59k miles
My 2013 started making a rattling noise from the engine at 59k miles that was present at all times and increased with engine speed. I thought it was the valves at first but came to understand that the cam lobe was worn. It’s at an Acura dealership now and they have tallied a bill for over $5k. My powertrain warranty is stated to have expired in March where this would have been covered.
Is there a way to still get them to cover it? I have done all maintenance up to this point. What’s the general cost of replacing the whole engine? I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut.

Is your car burning oil? A few people got their camshafts replaced under the excessive oil consumption TSA. It's not set in stone. They're reviewing each situation on a case by case basis. They almost didn't approve it, but they eventually ended up agreeing that the excessive oil consumption was to blame.
Also at that low mileage, you should try calling in head office and opening a case. Despite being past the warranty by time, cams don't deteriorate over time, it's mileage. They don't have any legal obligation to fix it, but just be nice and see if they'll make an exception for you. It would also help if you've been to the dealer for the same problem while under warranty, and can show record of your visits.

I hadn't noticed any decrease in the oil levels between changes, and I always ask the mechanic how much oil came out before he changes it. I bought the car at 32K miles, and maybe they had some low oil episodes? Not sure though.

The inconvenient truth
Did you actually check the oil levels regularly?
Because low oil is the most likely cause of this, especially at that mileage and knowing these engines have an oil burning issue.

I can hear my dad's voice in my head to check the hood weekly..... Yes, I check on a monthly basis or so when I wash my car. There were periods where I was travelling for work recently though, where I didn't get to check as regularly as I'd like. That may be the case.
My service advisor is working with Acura corporate to see if there's anything they can do.
