Hi Guys,
Wondering if anyone else has noticed this... When I'm in Sport mode and the indicator reads M1 (as i have used the paddle shifter) when I floor it no matter what I do the car shifts from 1st to 2nd @ 5500rpms. Clearly this does not seem right... My 2010 would NOT do this.
I think this could be part of the reason for the bad 0-60 times. Assuming i'm not the only one seeing this.

wow, seems they went back to the older shift program where it shifts from 1st to 2nd for you, and then you have to do the shifting from that point on...i would think this to be a good thing as i have forgotten to shift from time to time as i forget i was in S while sitting at a stop light...
did you check your owners manual to see what it says about this...

on anoter note, i havent seen the power chart as to where the tl makes the most power, but it is not necessarily at redline, in most cases, you would want to shift before your car falls out of its peak powerband so as to not loose power....if you drive right up to redline in most cases, you are past peak power so your not gaining anything from running to redline....

just read your owners manual online and it says it will shift automatically from 1st to 2nd while in S and using the paddles....this is different then the 09-11 cars, and even the 07-08 type s...
i suspect its set to shift early to keep you from bouncing the tach off the rev limiter...

Drifting
I don't think it allows you to hold first gear. I have a long driveway which I usually take in 1st gear. I put the TL in first and it shifts automatically to second. I could hold first gear in my 2006 RL.

09-11 will hold the shift in sport mode --- in any gear if I choose to hold at 6900 rpms the car will not shift until I tell it to. This is assuming you've shifted to sport, and engaged sport mode with the paddle shifters.
-- 2012 owners, are you allowed to downshift into first too? I noticed on the ZDX I it wouldn't let me do a 2-1 downshift until 20mph, whereas my TL I can issue a shift in D, or Sport at about 40mph...

From the manual: "When you accelerate from a stop, the transmission starts in first gear, and shifts from first to second automatically. You must manually upshift between second and sixth gears. Make sure you upshift before the engine speed reaches the tachometer’s red zone."

i would like to be allowed to downshift from 2-1 while comming to a stop...this part to me is a bummer...but again, not a deal breaker in my book, just the way it is...i am sure it has something to do with it being a 6speed vrs a 5 speed and the 1st gear being much shorter....

This has to do with the gear ratios which relates to power/torque multiplication.

This is a safety program installed into the ECU restricting you from doing so. Even without shifting the car will shift from 1st to second automatically even without you pressing the paddle. If you wanted to drive a true sports car you should've got a manual.
