First thing I'm doing after school is paying off the loans, no doubt. 2nd is probably skip the TL and buy the NSX or GTR haha but that's besides the point.

anyway I appreciate the number crunching. it seems a lot of you guys agree that it's better to buy new. I know there's a lot of unknown when buying used such as, how the previous owner drove etc. I just kind of think shelling out 20-22k for a new car is so expensive since neither of my parents make a great salary. I know they would buy it for me but I just don't want them to personally, I would feel bad. I guess it comes down to a cost vs value argument.

Are they going to be paying for your gas and maintenance too? If so, accord is the way to go... Or go 2008 TL....

If you are committed to staying in the Honda/Acura family, Also consider the new Civic.. Might be slightly more than the used Accord, new car w/ warranty in perfect condition, etc... Doesn't seem like you necessarily need the room of an Accord - I had the ILX, which is basically Acura's dressed up Civic, and I miss the size of it tbh (but love the power and everything else about the TL)

Anyways - Best of luck - You really can't go wrong with an Accord, Civic, TL, or most other Japanese imports - In the end, you know your needs and priorities best, so choose accordingly

Comparing Car Costs: Buy New, Buy Used or Lease? | Edmunds.com

this study done by edmunds is actually pretty relevant to the discussion. if you guys decide to read through it it basically compares leasing, buying new, and buying used. In terms of buying new/used, when its a 2-4 difference in the used and new vehicle, buying used is better. Well that's how I interpreted it. lol

I say find a low mileage, used Accord, preferably an EX trim level or higher and just enjoy the lower cost of ownership for now. There will be plenty of time down the road for a nicer car. Considering your parents' loving generosity, I think the most respectful and appreciative decision is to place a higher priority on value with this purchase. Choosing value over desire honors your parents more in my opinion. You are fortunate to have parents like yours. Good luck to you.

I am all for getting a new Accord idea given the used prices in the OP area. But I think the $18,930 price is probably a sales gimmick ... before destination charge, dealer fees, and blah blah ....

The DMV area is significantly cheaper than the Northeast or west coast from what I can tell. New Altimas go for around $17k here, so I wouldn't be surprised with a $19k Accord, maybe $20k (My friend bought hers in the area for under $20k + TTL)

New Accord LXs are good to go at that price in this area. Most dealers have a $199 doc fee on top of that.

My first car cost $250 and I had to pay for it myself.

Hey guys sorry to be MIA. The 2009 acura TL tech is still available and I could get it anytime, but I was gonna ask do you guys have any helpful opinions on the ILX? A dealership just called me and told me about a 2013 ILX w/ Tech 32,300 miles priced at 20,000.

ILX = Overpriced Civic.

I rather have a 4G TL.....

Why is that TL still there though? I know there's that airbag recall, but I didn't look into it, so I don't know if the 09 falls in that category.

Im not sure why it's still around. Maybe people would just rather buy new? And I only inquired about the ILX since it seems to have better gas mileage and smaller engine (which I'm fine with). Still has the tech package, just seeing if anybody else has driven/owned one.

After seeing the new Civic Touring, I don't think the ILX is a better buy at all.

If you could get the ILX with a V6 or if it came in SH-AWD format it'd be worthwhile as an upgrade. As it stands? Eh

I used to have an ILX Hybrid Tech before my TL. It was a great little car IMO with great gas mileage. The main downsides of the Hybrid variant was the fact that I purchased a lemon and the lack of power. However, I've driven the 2.0l gas versions and they are nice. I know someone on the ILX forum has something like 150k miles on his ILX with no real issues. I personally know a friend with a 2013 ILX with 80k+ miles on it (1 owner) with no issues.

IMO, the "fancy Civic" is a great car and worth the money. The fit and finish and quality of interior materials is better than the Civic and Accord (which both rattle like crazy after 36k miles or so - I drive in the city so lot of potholes and bumps) and is a lot nicer car overall. It's not a powerseller for Acura by any means, but it is a very solid car that has a enough power for 98% of drivers, reliable, etc. Make sure that the rear shocks are good/have been replaced - a ton of 2013 ILX's and RDX's have had rear shock issues (thumping noises)

If you don't use the back seat often, the ILX is a great car. For $20k, I think it's a bit overpriced, however. I'd expect closer to the $17k to $18k range. Note: If you are purchasing from a Honda/Acura dealer, I believe that they are not allowed to sell you 2013-early 2016 ILXs or 2009-2014 TL's because of the Takata Airbag recall. Replacement parts are starting to pop up, but I believe customer cars, not dealer cars, get the new inflators first.

You've effectively said the ILX should start for Civic pricing.

It actually starts at $27k MSRP and you can spec it to $34k.

That's ridiculous for that car. The *loaded* Civic is $26k. That's Honda Sensing, Navigation, LED lights, etc.

The Civic is a vastly better purchase if you're wanting that size vehicle.

Well i wouldn't pay anywhere near what the sticker price is (20,800 currently). I wouldn't pay a dime over 16,500 to be honest. I just think it would be a great car for city driving and seems low cost/maintenance for a student like myself. I'll probably use the recall as a way to reduce the cost haha.

The 3 year old used ILX that OP is considering would, yes, be priced the same as a new Civic. Given the market for used ILX's, $20k+ is overpriced for my area for a 2013 ILX Tech w/ 32k miles.

AFAIK, only Honda/Acura dealerships are restricted from selling cars under the Takata recall (2013-2016 ILX and 2009-2014 TL are affected). The ILX is a fine car with minimal maintenance. The 2.0 engine might not be up to "premium" standards, but has enough power for most non-enthusiast drivers. Gas mileage will definitely be better with the ILX too compared to the TL
