Hello, on cold starts I get a strange start up noise. It sounds like a high pitch Hunnnn... and then everything seems normal. I was thinking maybe its the start of the timing belt. 61000 miles. Adv with tech.

Mine does that too. I dunno I always found it normal. It's like less than a second long but usually in the mornings in the cold.

Its just the cold. Ive had that since day 1 at 20k and not one engine problem to date with 67k now

Yep same issue here, I'm at 82,000 and has been doing it for a while only in cold weather. Zero engine or any other issues.

the timing belt is not exposed. it has 3 main plastic covers that suppress noise and prevents fluid leaking onto the belt.

you're thinking of the drive belt.
which is out in the open and is subjected to dirt, grime and water.

If it happens right when you turn the key and lasts about 3-4 seconds, it's the starter. Mine had the same issue and got it fixed under the extended warranty (receipt showed $478 parts + labor).

However, now after a cold start my base TL has started to screech AFTER initial startup for about 15-20 seconds. I guess I gotta take it to the dealer again, lol.

Mine does the exact same thing but only below - 10C. All starter noise. Oh well it starts OK and noise goes away totally when warmed up. Not gonna lose sleep over it...

I just purchased the car 3 weeks ago and noticed the sound every time I started the car when it was below 30 degrees. At first I thought this was normal when the car is cold but after reading this forum I took it to the dealer right away and they diagnosed that it required a new starter engine.
