Your Favorite Summer Tires?

I have an '08 Type S running the stock Michelin MXM4 touring tires. I am in the market for some summer tires that will be switched out during the colder months in Philly. Depending on the weather, I hope to see close to 6 months per year on the summer set. Though I'm sure there will be many morning commutes that will begin in sub 50F degree weather.

I have had zero experience with summer only tires as every vehicle I've owned has had all seasons. So first off, what kind of weather limits am I looking at?
From what I understand, summer tires should have better wet traction (dry traction is a given) than my stock all season touring tires as long as temperatures are above 50F?

Reversely, I've also never had winter only tires and did not have a chance to give them a spin before the warmer weather hit. Will I still get better dry traction than my current stock Michelin MXM4?

Current: Stock Michelin Pilot HX MXM4
New Winter Set: Michelin Alpin PA2 (have not had a chance to try them out)
Want New Summer Set: Hankook Ventus V12 EVO or Nitto Invo

My main 'wants' for the summer tires are:
1) best dry/wet traction/hydroplane resistance
2) handling/braking
3) comparable to stock road noise or less
4) affordability
Not too concerned about treadlife as I drive less than 10,000 miles per year and half of that would be on the winter tires. Not looking to spend much yet, $150 per tire max since it will be my first summer tire experience. The V12 set can be had for about $450 and that's where I see myself going unless others have better suggestions?

I've read plenty of reviews on both the V12 and the Invo, slightly confused. Tire rack has had several test comparisons and the V12 always ranked poorly in the comparisons. However it ranks high in individual reviews and all other websites. The Invo reviews are all over the map, some say it's terrible whereas all Corvette drivers rave about them.

I love the TL but think I would love it more if could finally get some decent traction when accelerating.

I want to stay as close to stock diameter size as possible, don't want to go 250/40/17. I like my tires to look big and beefy on the Type S. Read tons on the forums and compared diameter and width. My stocks are 235/45/17 but actual diameter is 25.6 which is closer to most 245/45/17 tires.

wow, the star specs were not on my radar but it seems like they may be a great fit! will do some more review reading on them. thanks!

I went through the massive threads with people debating over what size to go. I remember reading lots of your posts and IHC posts. I was definitely tempted by the gains of a slightly smaller diameter tire and the increased tread width. But I didn't like how the tires looked smaller in the wheel well and my suspension will be staying stock.

Anything similar to the NT05s that you've tried?

I have had 2 sets of summer performance tires in the past. Cooper and Yokohamas. With both tires my car experienced Tramlining. I found what I gained in traction I lost in comfort. It may be just me, but I prefer to drive down a straight road without having to worry about the car darting left or right when it hits a tire groove or uneven pavement.

I'm definitely getting warmer to the idea of these Dunlops. They will cost about $700 shipped vs about $450 shipped for the Hankook V12. Are they that much better in terms of wet/dry traction?

Thanks for your help justnspace and lazer187

I was considering the Yoko S Drive but it seemed like the Hankook V12s were getting consistently better reviews. Which Yoko's did you have?

Where is the weight on the tires... I was looking at the continental DW stock size - 21lbs.
The thread width you get from a 245 is .2 more, so stayed stock. Will go to 17lbs rims when I do the new tires.

hah great, thought I had my mind made up but now I'm back looking at more options.

sticking with 245/45/17

Hankook Ventus V12 EVO 110 : $485
Nitto Invo : $600
Continental ExtremeContact DW : $625
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec : $715

Would I be satisfied with the V12s coming from the stock MXM4s? I'm thinking of going that route since these will be my first set. Then once they've worn out and I've had some summer tire experience under my belt, be in a better position to choose a more expensive/better summer tire?

Or are the other tires that much better that it would be worth it to shell out abit more?

I cant compare my tire with the others listed on your list but i can tell you the difference from Stock tires to these are night and day difference, the car handles so awesome it honestly handles like a 4wd car, It is near impossible for me to push these tires to the limit on most streets they stick like no other its AMAZING, I will never compromise the performance of these tires for anything less. I honestly never knew a tire could be so awesome in performance wise . FYI i push my car hard, and these tires still impress me and my friends. It will totally change the way of what & how you thought your car handles.

How's the tread noise on the Star Specs compared to the stock Michelins?

If i remember it was quieter, probably because of the soft tread compound. You wont regret I promise

Tempting tempting!

Hankook V12's for cheap or spend the extra bit and go for the Star Specs?

Anyone have experience with both that might be able to compare?

Or anyone have experience with Max Performance Summer tires vs Extreme Performance Summer tires?

All the research I've done - for others that might be in the same process as myself:

Nitto NT05 or Dunlop Star Specs - top rated in terms of grip
Continental Extreme Contact - close to top in terms of grip, tops in comfort/noise level
Hankook Ventus V12 - excellent across the board summer tires for cheap, just not sure how they stack up against higher tier'ed tires

Also this article was helpful in terms of comparing All Season/Winter/Summer tires in all 3 climate settings since I've only experience all seasons all year round. Want to know how summer tires fared in cold weather and how winter tires fared in warm weather? Read this:

I've run those exact BFGs in a 255/40/17 and they aren't in the same class. The NT05 rides better as well. Even compared to their flagship model the KDW, the NT05 kills them in every category with braking being somewhat close.

The turn-in response is also a little better. If you want the absolute best in dry traction, these two are the only choice. The BFG KDW-2 is also a good performer, they were somewhat close to the Nittos in braking but not that close in cornering. They're also so loud that you can't have a conversation with passengers, it sounds like you have mud tires on the car.

I make sure my alignments are perfect and when I rotate tires I have them taken off the rim and flipped around. I can get a good 15,000-19,000 miles out of them, sometimes more depending on if they see track duty or not. The Star Specs should get you into the 20,000 mile range.

I've run them for over 10,000 miles now. Pretty quiet for what they are. Treadwear isn't as bad as you would think for a tire with a 200 rating. Mine are maybe halfway to the wear markers at this mileage but I do a lot of freeway driving.

Braking is awesome. Cornering is amazing. It took me a while to get up the nerve to push these to their limits on the street. The limit is so high that it's hard to force yourself to take it there. I would hit the point where my old tires would break free at and the car was planted and stable with tons of traction left. But one area these tires really shine is the turn-in crispness. It's very sharp but without having an ultra stiff sidewall. The ride is what you would expect, firmer than stock but softer than many tires in lower performance categories. I think much of the turn-in crispness is from the large treadblocks.

In the rain they're average. I tried several ABS stops and some cornering in open areas and they're no worse than anything else I've run.

The big downside on a tire like this is they do like summer temps. In the middle of winter traction is still better than a normal tire but you have to remember not to push them because it is a larger difference between hot and cold than normal tires. I think this is true with any aggressive soft compound tire.

If you happen to try these, they run a little narrow. I'm running a 255/40 on the stock rims and they look like a 245.

Just found this older thread. I should've just linked to it in the first place instead of writing the above.

tirerack.com
discounttiredirect.com

Hankook V12
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/di...w=false&cs=245
$141 per tire x 4 = $564 + Free Shipping - $80 rebate = $484.00

Dunlop Star Spec
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....1SS&tab=Sizes#
$676 for set of 4 + $48 Shipping = $724

They supposedly price match as well =) But those were the cheapest I could find and they are both reputable businesses.

The first two posts said it all. NT05 or Star Specs for the absolute best summer tire. I would run either but the NT05 met my needs slightly better.

The nitto runs a little narrow. The 255/40 is perfectly acceptable on stock rims.

Thanks for all the great input everyone!

It's definitely narrowed down to:

Dunlop Star Spec ~ $725
Hankook V12 ~ $485

If prices were equal I would for sure pick the Star Specs. However I will not be tracking the car at all, just spirited daily driving. Only found 1 direct comparison pitting them head to head, I think it was on a 350z forum.

The reviewer called the Star Specs: Track tire with street performance
The reviewer called the V12s: Street tire with track performance

It's a toss up for me. Definitely a fan of the Star Spec tread design but that should come low on the priority list.

Anyone else able to comment on wet traction/noise level for either?
Dunlop wins for dry traction, Hankook wins for price.
I think Dunlop wins for wet traction, I think Hankook wins for noise level.

Never tried the starspecs but I have the Hankook Ventus V12 Evos on my type-s right now and so far they're amazing. I don't have experience with many tires though, only tried the oe Potenza RE030, Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, and Hankook Ventus V12 Evos on my Acura so far.

I would rank them like this in terms of performance:
1. Hankook245/40
2. Bridgestone 235/45
3. Michelin 245/45

I know it's not an answer to your question, but you can't go wrong with the Hankooks. It's probably not the absolute best in terms of grip, but you don't need the absolute best for spirited driving. Don't get me wrong though, they have AMAZING traction, best gripping tires I've ever owned. As a daily driver, I would go with the Hankooks.

Be careful with 245/45 though, that extra sidewall height sucks. It's a noticeable raise in the vehicle height and my car felt far less agile when I slapped the 245/45 tires on. I would rather use 235/45 than 245/45. You can take a look at the tires on my rpf1s in my FS/WTT thread.

For comparison, here is the 245/45 michelins on a 9" wheel:

Not sure if it'll look the same on the stock wheels though.

And here is the 245/40 Hankook on a 9" wide wheel

Huge difference in sidewall height. A 245/40 tire has a larger section width than a 245/45 tire, so you might get some extra rim protection even with the 40 series tire, just fyi. Don't quote me on that though.

Once again, thank you Acurazine members

I plan on going with the Hankook V12, at that price the consensus seems to be that I should be more than happy with the increased traction. Then once they wear out I will re-evaluate and see if I need to move up a tier to the star spec/nt05 category.

lumyeinjun - curious about the extra sidewall height you mention. According to tirerack's specs the V12 diameter is 25.7 (245/45/17)and my stock MXM4 diameter is 25.6 The .1 difference should not be very noticeable. I'm guessing you were running 245/45/18 and then 245/40/18? That's 25.7 vs 26.7 diameter, a whole 1.0 inch difference which would lead to the decreased agility. I'm sticking with stock 17 inch rims so I should only see the .1 difference I believe?

I will post when they are mounted and try to give a helpful review compared to the stock MXM4 tires, probably early next week.

You're right, new tires to new tires the height shouldn't make much of a difference. I was actually running both tires on my stock type-s wheels. Maybe it's because I went from bald 235/45s to new 245/45s haha

And yes, moving from the 245/45 to 245/40 tires made a huge difference in ride height and handling. I have to be careful not to scrape my front bumper now! The car sits noticeably lower with the 245/40s!

Regardless, any of the tires you mentioned will be a HUGE improvement over the MXM4 tires. I was looking at Continental DW tires before I got the Hankooks, but I heard the Continental DW tires have a soft sidewall and lack turn-in precision. Turn-in with the Hankooks is very sharp; i'm sure you'll love it! Especially coming from the stock eco tires haha

Just to share, I won't be needing to upgrade to extreme summer tires. These Max Performance Ventus V12 evos have more than enough grip for me

Off topic, but I would also like to share with you something that happened to me that might be worth noting:

I'm not sure what happened, but I think I hydroplaned while making a left turn on my stock Potenza RE030 max summer tires in 40 degree weather back in the Winter of 2009. It was the first rain of the season here in So cal and I had only been driving for about 2 minutes before I plowed into the sidewalk. It looked like I was understeering, but I don't believe it was understeer because I was going 20mph and letting off the gas didn't correct it.

It is important to note that the Potenza RE030 are crap summer tires with crap hydroplane resistance, so it might be a issue with the specific tire, not the category of tire. It's also possible that I simply slid on oil because it was the first rain. Regardless, just be careful when the temps go down to be safe.

I'm looking forward to both of your guys' results. Justin, definitely interested in your subjective feel of the Dunlops vs NT05. I'm getting ready to take stopping distance measurements with the new BBK on the NT05s. Any chance of you measuring stopping distances with your current Nittos and later on the Dunlops? I have a spot marked off, do an average over 10 stops, a minute to cool between each stop, note ambient and asphalt conditions, and use the same road each time. I can't be the only nerd that does stuff like this? I know it's hard on the car, not many people are willing and you can't directly compare due to weight differences and road differences but it's still nice to compare.

I'll be glad to join in on your experiment!

Yeah I don't drive my car daily and I live in Wisconsin so I just have these tires on for a few "good months" weather wise and I believe I have bought a total of 6 tires already and in desperate need of my 7th. I maybe get a max of 10k miles on the fronts, I should document my mileage next time to see how long these tires last. Yes I probably drive harder than most people do but most my daily driving allows for that but I don't normally gun it from a stand still so I'm easier on the car that way, I just push HARD through turns because I can :-)
