Question Winter Tires & Wheels -- Please Help

I have searched through some threads about winter stuff and would like to get some advice on my situation --

I am in NE Ohio where the winter gets ugly, and I do quite a bit of driving with my job. I have a 04 Aspec TL with 18" OZ rims with Yokohama Avid W4S tires (235/40-18).

We have had a few ugly days so far and my car just does not feel safe (loose feeling at times and just feel as if I am getting no traction). This is my 2nd winter with this car -- last year I was not driving as much.

My question is will putting winter tires on these wheels really help during the winter? Ideally I would like to get new tires and wheels, but I can really only afford the tires at this time. If you think they will really help, what is a good/affordable, winter only tire that you would recommend?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, a good set of dedicated snow tires makes a world of difference. I have the Yoko W4S as well on 18" A-Specs for Summer...they work great right up until the 1st snowfall. Then I bought a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s which I mounted on my OEM Type-S wheels. We just got dumped on today (25 cms of snow) and they perform very well. Not as much bite as a studdable ice tire, but the PA3s perform much better on dry pavement than X-Ices and the like as well.....a trade off that I was prepared to make.

Point is that dedicated snows on rims provide safe Winter handling and your Yokos will last that much longer...plus your nice alloys won't get trashed by salt.
