Winter tires: regular vs. performance?

Winter tires: regular vs. performance?
I'm looking for a set of winter tires with emphasis on handling in snow/slush/ice and not so much concerned with (hold your breath) speed rating, performance, etc.
Acura offers packages with Blizzak WS-50, Blizzak LM-22, Michelin Pilot Alpin. I'm happy to pay extra for the performance tires if they are at least as good in the snow as the WS-50.
Anyone out there with experience with any of these tires in severe winter driving conditions? How do they handle when the winter roads are bare?
Just thought I'd ask before dropping (another) grand...

I can't give you any first-hand advice yet on what handles best, but...
Last week the Nov 2006 Consumer Reports came out with Winter Tire ratings. But they didn't even bother testing any W-rated tires, mainly Hs and Vs.
Of the V-rated tires, they liked the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4's best but they were pricey ($150 or so each).
Have you looked at The Tire Rack? (1-888-371-8473 or www.tirerack.com) They have a pretty good selection and could also sell you a wheel package to make it easier to mount them.
What's the old saying... "Take my advice, I'm not using it"
