Winter tire sizing - help!
Hello everyone,
I'm newly registered to the forum, and am requesting some feedback/help from you experts![Smile](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I have a 2007 TL Type S, and I'm looking to get winter tires. I've searched this forum and it seems that many people with 3rd generation TLs have downsized and used 215/55R16 winter tires. But I just requested a quote from Tires23, and they said that I have to get 17", specifically: "Type S do require minimum 17" wheel to clear the brake". So what's the truth?
I'm also looking for recommendations on tires. Cheap (hence the downsizing) and good on highway. Seems that the top 3 options are Hankook w409, Nordfrost 5, and Continental ExtremeWinterContact. Feedback please?
many thanks!

Get OE size 235/45-17 and take a look at the following for $117ea. and meets the severe snow service:

Pick up a set of OE '04-'06 wheels or if you use the '07-'08 base wheel you'll need a 3mm spacer on the front.

Certainly doesn't look like skinny tires to me:

I have a 2007 Type S..... I run winter tires, used to just have the tires swapped seasonally on my stock Type S wheels. After 1 season of swapping back and forth I decided to buy another set of wheels. I searched ebay and craigslist and found a set of 2006 wheels with sensor already in them, had my winter tires mounted and have never looked back. I run General Altimax Arctic in the stock sizes...... the car is phenominal in the snow. Because of the Brembo brakes you will not be able to go down to a 16" wheel due to clearance. Hope this clears things up for you.

A 215/50-17 isn't even recommended for a 8" wide wheel. Stick with the OE size. People believe that the skinny tire will cut through the snow......Yea right, ever see hard packed snow, it's not going to cut through and with the skinny tire handling is certainly compromised.
But with todays rubber compounds and tread design technology it doesn't apply any more.
Good sipe design solves that and compact snow traction.
On my winter car ( 2012 Civic) I am running my oem 17s off the TL with 225/45/17 Dunlop Graspic and its great. Civic rims ar 6.5" . TLs are 8.

Not sure if this helps much, but I ran the W409s on my Integra last year and they made a huge difference. I took the plunge again this year and bought a set of General Altimax Arctics in 225/45 17 for my TL and I'm having them installed on Friday. I talked with the guys at Discount Tire and they said the 225s would work fine and they were cheaper than the 235s. I thought maybe a slightly narrower couldn't hurt. I got them for $135 a piece online shipped to my door from Discounttiredirect.com. Better than the $190 per tire the dealership wanted. Hope that helps. I'll try and post an update once I get them mounted up(and nitrogen filled).
