Winter is coming, Need Winter Tire Suggestions

Size? Brand? New Rims with it? I don't know where to start.

I'm not looking to pay an arm and a leg for this, but would prefer to put my rims to rest for the winter, and pull out a brand new set of tires and rims. I checked out Tirerack, and the only tire that comes up in the Stock size for the TL-S is the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50. Are these tires any good?

Do you guys recommend using my stock rims with this? or should I purchase a separate set of alloys for the winter???

If you still have your stock rims/tires then why not use them? Don't waste $$$, give it to me.

I am about to put my rims away for the winter too and I am using my stocks.

Hi sc354,

Sorry but i think you will be disappointed with the WS-50

Here's the ratings for these tires:

Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50
Dry Traction 3
Wet Traction 3.5
Snow Traction 4.4
Handling Ride 3
Comfort Noise 3.5
Comfort 3.2
Treadwear 2.3
Overall 3.3
(5 =100%)

An overall of 66% is not such a good choice...

A good choice would be the Michelin Pilot Alpin,
(Do NOT confuse with the Michelin Artic Alpin, overall rating of 3.4)

Michelin Pilot Alpin
Dry Traction 4.2
Wet Traction 4.4
Snow Traction 4.3
Handling Ride 4.4
Comfort Noise 4.3
Comfort 4.1
Treadwear 4
Overall 4.2
(5 =100%)

I've been using Pilot Alpin and they are a great choice

As for the size, they come in 215/55/16 not 205/60/16.
They will fit perfectly on your rims without ANY problems.

The only small drawback:
A speedometer difference of 1.469% too fast...
So if you're going 100km your odo will show 101.469km
Nothing to get you a speed ticket by mistake.... :p

These tires are of course more expensive but they WILL last
MUCH longer so you will get in longevity what you loose in $.
(WS-50=$106usd Pilot=$132usd)

Hope i was of some help,

Pierre

here's the little problem. I have the TL-S, and the stock rims are 215/50/17, therefore the 16 inches will not fit on my stock rims. Do they have tires that will fit on the stock TL-S rims???

thanks

I hear the Michelin Artic Alpines is rated number 1 for winter tires. Problem is they only come in 215/60/17
Is the 60 going to mess up my speedometer? Our stock size is 215/50/17

Arctic Alpin are good tires.

But if want VERY good tires go for the Pilot Alpin!
I've tried both and there is a big difference between them.

I'm a big user of winter tires, first i live in Montreal and
every week-end i go skiing up north, so i meet about
every kind of snow, ice and possible temperatures.

The Pilot Alpin comes in 205/50R17
Comparing to the stock 215/50R17

The difference is:
Speedometer Difference: 1.554% too fast
Diameter Difference: 1.54%
Revs per Mile: 829.6 against 816.9

will I still be able to use my stock rims with this tire??? 205/50/17 will fit without a problem??? Will I run into possible issues such as the tire popping off during hard cornering?

Just get steel rims on 16's with the better tires. If you want the looks, go for used TL-P rims (216/60/16). Leave the stock tires on the stock rims and store them for the winter. Your driving habits need to change as well with different tires and different weather. I've lost too many stock rims and ruined enough suspensions during winter to know that, especially how it is in T.O. Don't do hard cornering or power takeoffs on the winter tires too. I don't think they were built for that, their speed ratings are even lower than the stock. I wouldn'y worry about the looks since the car would end up dirty most of the winter with all the salt, brine, etc.. Save the good looks for the good weather.
