It may be a wierd fit. 8 inch wide rims hold a 225 or 235 no sweat.
Ask your local tire store- they have a guage that measure the rim width and a chart of what tires will fit and be safe- 8.5 is popular with wider tires
Same info can be found in the internet
Watch for rear fender clearance issue with wide tires and lowered cars

there are members running 235/40/18 on 8". 255/35/18 should be fine, but the aspect ratio might throw the speedo off by a certain %.

IMO, 235/40/18 and 245/40/18 are better and are most common for 18x8.

245/40-18 is the best of both worlds...

255/35 doesn't give very much sidewall support for a tire that is being fit on a slghtly narrow rim already. That *may* make it harder to install and *may* compromise ride/handling/safety.

255/40 is normally not recommended by the tire manufacturers for an 8" rim either. They normally list 8.5" as the minmimum rim width for 255.

A lot of people run the 255/40 on 8" and it doesn't seem to be a problem. My guess is that 255/40 is "better" than 255/35 on an 8" rim.
