let's say i can customize my wheels so that the offset is 55 or more, can I go with 255 or wider?

Then you will need a lot more than just rolling your fender, you can do a custom job, extend your fender, and basically have someone make the fender flare for you. Somebody done it to an Accord. Then you can in theory, fit 255/40 or 255/35 on your car.

i suppose if you are going with that high of an offset, i would imagine you are also going with a wider rim. i think an 8.5" rim would fit in there so you are probably looking 255 max (per tire manufacturer's websites). not sure if you will find the right 255 tire so the rolling diameter will be close to stock or not.
