I have been expressing my love affair with these Goodyear F1-D3 often in my previous post. So to spare the other readers having to listen to it too much more, I will hit just the highlights:
1) They are ranked nearly #1 in most categories by the people’s feedback on Tirerack.
2) They are MAGIC in the rain. Again, on Tirerack, they are ranked the best against hydroplaning. This is the MOST important thing to me personally. I HATE, HATE hydroplaning with a purple passion. And, the F1's deliver. Recently, I pushed them during a heavy downpour to see if I could provoke them to hydroplane. No way in hell were they going to hydroplane !!!! I was going much faster than the sane drivers during a heavy rain, and tightened my pucker and my death-grip on the steering wheel as I encounter standing water (large puddles) in the freeway. Not even the slightest hint of hydroplaning while doing 75 mph thru standing water with approx 50% thread depth remaining on the front tires. This was with my wife's RL which has the F1 tires too. And credit does NOT go to the RL. When we first got her RL, it had the oem spec'ed Michelin tires on it. My pucker reached record-level tightness as it hydroplaned at 55 mph during a light rain with NO standing water with those oem spec'ed tires.
3) The F1's are very smooth riding and quiet to me.
4) The F1 have a sticky rubber compound compared to other passenger car tires. And, as they age, the compound does not seem to harden, and does not lose their stickiness. And amazingly, they have fantastic tire life for such a soft tire compound.
5) I love the appearance of the F1's thread pattern and how it improves a car's appearance.

So I guess you like the F1's?
I've seen that GY has released an All Season version of the F1. Any word on them? Do they compare to the 960AS Pole Position or Advan S.4? The price is right and they come in your size.

- ride seems softer
- cars feels like its stuck on road. (mind you I make some very sharp turns)
- I have had almost 6000 miles on my Kumoho, and face NO PROBLEMS.
- I had no trouble getting them installed on my stock rims.

Update: I have just installed the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S tires, and I must say there is a significant noticeable improvement over the stock tires. The size is 255/45/17, and the tires handle beautifully. The tread design is aggressive, and the tires fill up the space very well. I must say they look better than the stock when mounted. I will get pics for you guys soon, just been real busy lately...

[QUOTE=Inaccurate]Inaccurate's "Top Ten List"
As to Why You Should Get 255/40-17 Tires
for your OEM rims.
(please note this is 255/40 not 245/45.)
10) Lower effective gear ratio
9) Increased braking force per given pressure on brake pedal
8) Slightly lower stance (estimating 1/4 inch)
7) Great rim protection without being excessive
6) With the 255 tires, TL now looks even more like a BMW
5) You will be less envious of others having A-Spec
4) Having wider tires than a G35
3) Car feels lighter (accelerates easier, brakes easier, more responsive steering)
2) Don't need to stay 10-feet away from the nearest curb anymore
1) TL now looks plain 'ol "mean" as heck
10) NEGLIGIBLE
9) NEGLIGIBLE
8) NEGLIGIBLE
7) THE ONLY GOOD REASON
6) ?????????????????
5) ?????????????????
4) not sure why this matters. if it does, it'd be the only reason the TL would be better than a G35.

My El42's have finally gone bald after 24K miles. I have 245/45-17 size and thinking about trying the 255/40-17 with the GY allseason. I hear good things about them and you folks seem to like the D3's. Any opinion's on this? Should I stay with the 245/45-17?

Winter Driving????
Has anyone experienced running 255's in the winter? How was the traction? I am thinking of switching to 245's from the OEM 235's (mainly because of the snowy winters in WI). Thanks

255/40-17 or 245/45-17 ? Only you can answer this question. To me, it boils down to this - -
If you like the look of traditional tires (with more sidewall height) that fills-up the wheel well area, then get the 245/45-17.
If you like the look of high-performance tires with the short sidewalls, and you are okay with having a tiny bit more of the wheel well being less filled, then get the 255/40-17.
Either way, you will be happy that you replaced the El42's.

FYI - My 05 TL falls into the TSB(05-050) post#316, this explains my rear tire wear. Dealer would only replace with EL42's from tire rack, they would only pay 25% of price. I know most of you have more than 25K on your 04-05 TL's with the EL42's, but you might want to get the bumpstops. I'm going to get the GY F1 eagle allseason 245/45 at GY and have the TSB(05-050) done after they are intstalled.
A post on tire rack mentions that he lost 3-4 mpg after new GY allseason tires where installed on his TL. Should I expect this from any tire going from a 235 OEM El42 to a 245/255 ... tire? The previous posts with all the calcs do not show this much loss. Have you lost this kind of mpg with larger/wider tires? or is it the GY allseason tire? I'm getting them installed tomorrow morning, should I cancel the order?

Spiritman,
I would Not do the 265 although fitment would be ok as for as not rubbing. Here is why -
The ASPEC rim is the same 8.0 inch width as the regular rim.
The 255 tire is pushing the rules already because the rear-end of the car does not have the weight to push down the tire to make full contact across the entire width of the tire and the road. So, the 265 would be even worse.
Even more worse is the 35 profile. The 35 has less sidewall than the 40 to allow the tire to relax between the too narrow rim. So, now you have two strikes against you - 1) 265 is wider than 255 and 2) the 35 profile will pull up the edges preventing an adequate contact patch with the rear tires.
I do not recommend the 265/35 with the 8.0 inch rim.

Man of God.....
Now you've got my interest!
The tire guy (discount tire) thought this was like "the size" for this car..... Now what. If the 35 is too much or too little I should say. Then we should see it when it's mounted. Right? I wonder if the 265 is going to be any different than the 235? They wore only in the inside edges. Like on all four tires because I kept them rotated. So you think that there will be less contact on the road? I don't know...
He was going to have me as a customer anyway. So why get me into the 265? I mean if it was going too be a problem....later on??

Only other pic I have. You can kind of see the side view. The GN in the pic has the same size and type with the exception of the tread pattern.

I went with 245/40/17's on my '05, and they were like 4 big snow plows in 4" of snow..........but damn, they looked good. Personally, I would recommend 245's over 255's mainly because they are compatible with a stock 8" width, with little difference in width IMO. I would have to say that ACURA went with 235/45/17 as the best compromise.
#349
From my own experience, I switched from 235/45/17 to 245/40/17's on my '05, and it was like adding 4 big snowplows. They looked great, though.
The tires you are comparing don't have a great amount of width difference, so both are not a good bet for snow. I would stick with 235/45/17 for winter use IMO.
BTW, they were Michelin Pilot A/S's.

After 26K miles I need new tires. I'm glad I happened onto this thread. I was going to buy OEM size replacements, but I decided to go with GY F1's A/S 245-40-17. Thanks to all with the great info.

2007 TL TYPE S ASM
InAccurate,
I have been looking to get some A-Apec wheels to replace the stock wheels that I had put on my '07 TL Type S (because I couldn't stand the black basket wheels), but after reading this thread for the past week, have decided to go with the 255/40/17 Bridgestone 050A Pole Position tires. I like the tread pattern of these better (personal preference) and have used Bridgestone RE750 on my old 1988 535is BMW before I sold it to get the TL Type S. I kept looking at wheels and the more I looked at them I felt I was looking at the same thing. Most of them are wheels that have bars and double spokes in some type of variation. It wasn't that I didn't like the stock rims, but that I saw more rim than tire when I looked at them. The advantage I see with the new tires I ordered is that it now won't look stock because of the meats I am installing. Will update with pictures as soon as they are mounted. Add me to the list!

I also decided just after ordering the 255/40/17 tires to get the Eibach Pro Springs from TireRack which should lower the car about 1" and really make it look sweet. Will update ASAP with pictures after installed.

I got my car (2007 TL Type S) back from the shop today with the 255/40/17 Bridgestone RE050A Pole Position Tires mounted to the stock TL 17x8 wheels and with the Eibach Pro-Kit Springs which lowered the car. It really made a big difference in appearance and I am really pleased with the look. Haven't had much of a chance to drive many miles with it, but so far it feels great besides the looks. Thanks Inacurate for starting this post. It helped me decide what to do. I have included some before and after pictures for viewing the difference

Yes, the tires 255/40/17 will work with a 17x8 wheel which should be the same wheel that Inaccurate had at the beginning of the thread (2004-2006 wheel). When my Bridgestone RE050A Pole Position tires arrived they were so wide I thought - no way they are going to fit! But the shop mounted them up and they looked awesome and now protect the rim from curb rash. I even lowered my car and I have no rubbing issues turn to turn.

I am not so sure 255's are the way to go. Per the specs on Tire Rack's website you can get just as wide of a tire by choosing one that has a wider tread section. The Bridgestone listed below in stock size has the same tread width as the 255 Goodyear.
Goodyear GSD3's
255/40ZR17
Tread Depth 11/32"
Recommended rim width 8.5-10"
Tread Width 8.7"
Bridgestone RE05 Pole position
235/45ZR17
Tread Depth 10/32"
Recommended rim width 7.5-9"
Tread Width 8.7"
Goodyear GSD3's
255/40ZR17
Tread Depth 11/32"
Recommended rim width 8.5-10"
Tread Width 8.7"
Bridgestone RE05 Pole position
235/45ZR17
Tread Depth 10/32"
Recommended rim width 7.5-9"
Tread Width 8.7"
