Wheel weights from balancing

I just had a tire replaced and noticed four grey chichlet looking things. http://www.flickr.com/photos/66198972@N06/8215139109/

I dont know if they were there before and I looked at another wheel had two of these in a similar location (horizontal flap). Is this normal? Could they be hidden without any major impact to the performance/handling?

Thanks for reading.

Leave them be, they are necessary to balance the tire.

Thanks. I had never seen them before and thought maybe I got a rip job by a shady business. Just looks wise is not the best and now I know it's there they will stand out even more.

It's a stick on wheel weight, instead the clamp one. They're 2 kind of weight. That and the one they clamp it on the lip of the wheels (regular).
