What to get... 18", 19", or 20"

I'm planning on getting some new rims with my tax return money to do my part in stimulating the economy. I'm trying to decide what to get... I'm not planning on lowering my car for a long long time, if ever, and I don't want the ride height increased over stock, if anything, a little lower would be nicer. Also, from many pics I've seen, 18" rims don't look that much bigger than stock on our TL's, but it's easier to find them in the price range that I want to be in. 19"s seem about right, but the price difference between 18"s and 19"s is silly, and might as well get some 20"s for the same price as 19"s. I hope you can see my problem here. If anyone has pics of these size rims on a DGP, or from what I was told at the dealership, "deep emerald metallic", please post!!

Also, I'm not interested in chrome at all, it'd be aluminum, black, gunmetal, or a combo of them. Any insight/advice would be appreciated.

i agree that 18's look to small. If you where to have a set of 18s they have to be the A-specs only. As far as what to get in your price range. 19s and 20s are almost the same price. I've seen alot of 20s cheaper than 19s. It just depends on how low you want to go.Personally, i'm going with 20s, i had 19s which looked great, but after seeing a 20 on my car i had to sell them.

From what I've been seeing in "blowout specials", 19"s and 20"s are about 1100 w/ tires, that's about where I want to be. But the dang 18"s are 800 w/tires... stupid 2 inches...

19's look great, although they make the rotors look *really* small.

20's are too big, IMHO, but can still look good with the right style, drop, etc.

Both 19's and 20's can add a LOT of weight; unsprung weight - the worst kind from a performance perspective.

- 18's are the best balance for look, performance/weight and ride quality.

If overall diameter is approx stock, then the wheel well gap stays the same regardless of which wheel you get - you trade off wheel diameter for sidewall. The more sidewall you give up, the more likely you'll have a harsh ride.

Hmmm... maybe I should keep the stock rims for now, and get a set of Tein basics first to drop it a bit, then get new rims farther on down the road... sounds like 20"s may be a bit overkill, eh?

Just google "wheel and tire package", click on a few links, and then see if they have "blowout specials". Alot of times the rims on there look like garbage, but I've found a few good lookin' ones. Can't decide if black or gunmetal would look good on a DGP color TL.

I've always liked 19's, especially if you have a good drop! Good luck and just search the picture threads, you will get plenty of ideas

19's. And if you get some nice lightweight forged ones, they aren't heavy at all.

it all depends what kind of rims. Some 19's look like 18's and some 18's look like 19's. If the wheels has a lip, they might look smaller.

I say buy a set of like new RonJon Liquid Graphite Legend 19" wheels with like new 245/35/19" General Extreme UHP tires, 1 wheel is curbed but isnt that bad, can be fixed for $100, the other 3 wheels are in excellent condition. 3 months old.

Thats what you should buy. Go to the Black Market:

I didn't know RonJons were only 1300 without tires... I"ll have to look into that for our TL. I paid $2500 without tires for the Work wheels on my other car.

Keep in mind you get what you paid for though. My wheels came in with several paint imperfections, although minor, but still annoying nonetheless. Im sure the qualities of "fit and finish" of RonJons is way below Work. But still, for $1300, you cant really complaint.

I went through the same issue a month ago. 19s...? or 20s...?
I ended up goin with 20s due to the tire selection. 19" tires seemed to be more expensive & rare... seemed to be more for sport/racing wheels. I maintained a similar ride quality... just a bit firmer when goin over railroad tracks. Plus I almost eliminated the gap between my tires & fenders. NO LOWERING NEEDED

I have had them on for over a week & have not had any rubbing PERIOD.

The 8.5" wide 20s fit perfect when matched with 235/35/20 in the front & 245/35/20 in the rear. The wider tires in the back look aggressive & give off a staggered appearance. The only mod needed was a slight roll of the top center of the rear fender.

How can you go with such a short width on 20' rims?? I would imagine it being at least 245 or something like that??

It depends on how wide the wheels are. If it's 20x8, then 225's are fine. Plus, anything wider wouldnt matter anyways, cause the tires would stretch.

225 on an 8" wide wheel is already a little stretched. At least it was when I had that setup on my other car (came that way stock)

That's your prerogative, but I think a staggered setup with wider tires in back on a FWD car looks retarded.

If you're gonna go bigger, then GO BIGGER! 20"s FTW! Also, in most cases, 20" wheels and tires are cheaper than 19".

How much drop can be achieved with a common 20" wheel/tire set up so no rubbing issues are evident?

You can drop it as much as you would with 17's, 18', or 19's, but it depends on the offset of the wheels and the size of the tires.

Get 19's, if you get 20's you have to roll the fenders.

I'm dropped 1.25 inches and its perfect...

You'll only have to roll the fenders if you drop your car on 20's.. If you're not planning on dropping it, no need to roll your fenders...

Depends on the width and offset. I'm dropped more than 2.5" on 20x8.5 wheels with a +48 offset. No rubbing and no fender rolling necessary.
