Vote: Bridgestone RE760 VS S04

I am between these 2 tires and cannot decide which one I like the best. To me, both tires will work fine for my Acura TL. Both are sporty and handle well in both wet or dry. So, this may sound strange, but it almost boils down to which tire looks the best. I like the Looks of the S04 but I called firestone and they said from a "profile standpoint" the RE760 looks like an extreme performance tire and the S04 looks only like a "Hi performance" tire. He mentioned because of the tread design, but I think there is very little difference in tread design in appearance since both are NOT all-season and they are summer tires.. So, that part is matter of taste.. I mentioned "sidewall" is important too, and he said the side wall is more rounded off.. I feel like I put words in his mouth about the side wall.. And he doesn't have either 1 in stock so I cannot compare them side by side. I like the almost stretched look of a tire. Not a lot, but a little.

As for Michelin PSS, I know they are probably a better tire, BUT no one in Dallas has them AND most importantly, everyone who can get them wants to charge me an extra $60 just to install the TPMS sensors on 4 rims and I have no sensors on it now. However, Firestone is the only one who will not charge me to install the sensors since the tires will already be off the car, AND the RE760 is only $121 per tire and the S04 is $129. So, that's like $70 off on the 4th tire. So, good prices both ways! And I do not track my car. Now, which one looks best and handles well on a TL? haha

If you're set on Bridgestone's, guess not much difference, but the 760 has a higher speed rating as well as better tread wear. Get the 760's in 245/45-17.
Take a look at the BFG G Force at only $113 each.

Of course the Firestone rep is going to tell you his tire is fantastic, lol. I have RE760's on my car and have been happy with them. It sounds crazy, but tread pattern is always part of the decision for me too haha. I can take photos if you'd like.

Here is some of the photos of the re760 in 255-40-17. I have had 3 sets on my second gen tl and on my first set on my third gen tl. It's been my favorite tire out of five different ones I tried.

That's too big. I dont want it hanging over. I like it mildly tapered in, like a mild stretch. I strongly don't like the tire hanging over the rim. But everything else you said makes sense!! thanks!

thanks for posting, but that's too big for my tastes.. and I can't see the side of the tire in the pics to see if the wall is tapered in.. but I know its not because I see the size number and its really sticking out from the rim.. *shrug*

I've seen many pics.. OEM size 235/45/17 is the best size IMO for 17's...

It's not tapered in and I like the look of the wider tire and the extra handling and traction. Even with the tire at 235-45-17 it's probably not going to be tapered in.

I differ from your opinion on tire size but the subject is not tire size. So we can save it for later.

That's certainly a first. The 245's would give the tire another .15" over the wheel, so it that is a concern, stick with the shorter and narrow 235.

Thats what I am doing.

Did you get those pics yet? I am suppose to call and setup the appt. And he has to order them into his shop. I saw some pics in your profile. Are those the ones? They look pretty good.

I ended up getting the S-04's. But I could have easily have got the RE760's. I think the S-04's lean toward all-season whereas the RE760 is more summer extreme performance. But for reason I had mind head set on S-04's So I got those. And I think someone was right when they said that if you want to see that rim protector or if you want it stretched a little but, then you would have to veer off the OEM size. Because I got the OEM size and it does have a little more rim protector than the V12 EVO (my last tires) but not by much! It's nearly straight up and down. The S-04 really handles well in a corner though! Its much more nibble and lighter steering wheel compared to my V12 EVo that were down to the nearly the wear indicators. So, maybe its just a new tire? Not sure, but it even turns lighter. But still, I do wish the shoulder did not have so many Notches in the tread like an all-season tire. The RE760 has fewer notches and more rubber on the ground. (or at least it appears that way).. Its hard to measure "tread void".. like all the empty spaces to get a total contact area.. But the RE760 seems to look like it has more contact area because the tread pattern looks more "filled in" with rubber. But Everything in tires has its pro's and cons.. The S-04 is more of a balance between performance and rain and even snow.. I would not want to put the RE760 on snow. But hey, in Dallas, we don't get much snow, but when it happens, the car will be driven on snowy roads if I have to! I never swap tires. I ain't that rich to have 2 sets of tires. haha So, overall I could have gotton the RE760's, but the reason I didn't was because I thought the shoulders, even though they have fewer notches in the tread, I thought the bigger blocks of rubber would look too "blocky" and "bulky" and take away from the "stretched look". So, I was about to contemplate both of these for 20 hours, until I just had to pick one. And the advice you get depends on the person!! Even if you talk to 2 difference people at Firestone, one guy said he had the RE760's on his camaro and couldnt use the S-04, but another guy told me that the S-04 will runs circles around the RE760's in cornering. I also heard the RE760's are not as good in the rain. So, I took the "middle of the road" and went with the S-04's. If I had a Corvette or a Camaro, I would probably go with the RE760's because they have more rubber and fewer grooves in the tread.. That might be why they last a bit longer too.. (more support)

They really put on some messy gloss!! I gotta take a better pic.

Sorry for the blurr...

I have the S04 about 8000-10000 miles on them and so far so good

if i remember correctly they are listed on some websites as a summer tire; something to keep in mind. They are all-season but my gut tells me they wouldnt perform great in frequent bad weather

Dang I already sold my old tires for 50 bucks. See, if you dont quite wear them out then you can sell them.

I will take more pictures this weekend in daylight after i clean off all that oil they slopped on my tires.. haha. But i gotta respray the plastidip. The new tires rubbed on the edges and pulled the plastidip.. so I bought in advance 2 other plastidip products to test with and try out... But before I do that! I am getting my new typeS cluster odometer programmed tomorrow am.

I just drove my car again, this time on the highway and for farther than 10 miles. What little I had driven it, like up to walmart and stuff the car handled better around curves at slow speeds, like under 30. But today I got out on the highway and started driving it around.. And the car is much more stabile. It doesn't feel "woobly" any more. I had no idea tires could do that.. I have the Koni's and eibachs and with these tires, it really made the suspension come alive. It feels MUCH more like a sports car now versus a woobly sedan. The steering is much quicker to respond! And it drives easier. Just driving straight on the highway, it seems to go straighter without veering off left or right. I used to have a problem with it being all over the road.. and sort of hard to control.. but it doesn't do that anymore. I also used to say the car felt more stabile with the trunk loaded, but now it is stabile all the time. Just driving at 70 and moving left and right and curving around long corners around the highway feels MUCH more "sure". I can't imagine how much better it would be with a typeS anti-sway bar and a new RSB. But these tires are much better than my previous V12 EVO's. I think the EVO's had softer side walls than what I thought! So, there is a bit more feedback from the tires. Probably because they are stiffer.. So the ride does feel a bit rougher compared to my V12 EVo's, but for what I am getting in return, it's definitely worth it. These S04's may look more "all-seasonish" compared to the RE760(because of the tread design).. But trust me, they are a great performance tire! Plus, this tread design is not like most actual all-season tires anyway and the treadwear is 280. That should tell you something about its performance, because most performance tires of a lower treadwear rating.

Btw, when I was just on the highway, I noticed there was a BMW around me.. he was infront at first and then behind me, and then infront of me. He had like 19" rims and lower profile tires, that were "nicely stretched" but not extreme, and we were driving through the slower cars, my car was very sure, and very stabile and ready for any curves! That sums up the S04's quite well.. but don't forget about the massive grooves it has for rain.

If I could do it again, I would try to get a bit more of a stretched tire, so that might mean getting a 225 instead of a 235. But then I might have to raise the "ratio" of the tire from 45 to 50 so I could keep the same height tire so it wouldn't effect my speedometer. But still, I like it the way it is now too! But I definitely would not go with 245 or 255 width. That's not needed and it doesn't look good in my opinion!

peace!

what tires did you have on before?

cant really compared cheap old worn out tires to brand new bridgestones, its simply not fair. I'd be surprised if the bridgestones werent better in every way

Sorry I did not get back to you. Can't go wrong with either tire, unless you need A/S in which case I wouldn't get the 760's. Are you happy with the S04's? I am currently looking to replace my Yoko Avid EnVigors.

Here are a couple photos for the next person that comes looking for this thread. In the first pic the wheel in the foreground is 18x8.5 +31, wheel in background is 18x8 +38. Both wearing 225/40/18.

I like how that 8.5" rim has a bit more of a stretched appearance on the tire. To be honest, I think the both RE760 and the S04 are very similar. I like my S04's but they seem to be a bit harsh over bumps. This is probably because it is a high performance tire and everything is firmer and harder on a high performance tire. And to be quite honest, I think the S04's are a bit of an overkill for the TL. If I could get the the right stretch, I would have probably have rather had the Turanza ER33. I have seen many new sedans with this tire and it looks hot! They usually have a slight stretch to them. Even the ford Focus and some BMW's have the ER33's. They look real fluid on the car, and progressive - modern.. They also have a high speed rating like the S04's. But don't both looking at the pictures on TireRack.. That doesn't come close to how good they look on many cars that I have seen.

However, the S04's do make the TL handle much lighter on its feet. For the added harshness, I did get quicker steering and better cornering and a lighter steering wheel. So, I dunno.. All tires have their pro's and con's. Maybe the Michelin Super Sport would have been a better choice, but there are non in the Dallas area. None that I could find anyway.

Every tire I've ever bought has been overkill haha. I always go for ZR rated tires just because they usually have cool tread patterns/sidewalls, etc. But I just like buying nice tires even though they're more than the car needs.

Best tires I've ever owned were Toyo T1R's. Even in 215/50/17 they were like riding on rails, the handling and grip was amazing. They are summer though.

Thanks for the rec on the Turanza's, I've never liked how that tire line looked but you have me curious.

here is a day shot of the tires. I need to redo my plastidip. I have 2 other color to experiment with. They damaged the plastidip when they removed the old tires. So, I have 2 other colors. What you see is old and dirty "true metalic silver".. But I have cans of Silver metalizer and bright aluminum silver. So, I want to peel off the current coating and spray 1 or 2 coats of the silver metalizer and see how that looks on top of the dark color which is underneath. So, bare with me as it is too cold outside to mess with it for now.

noooo.. If I cant put my eyes on them, or touch them, then I aint buying them. And size greatly effects how the tire looks. So who knows what it gunna look like.

And honestly, I thought the S04 tire looked better on the sales floor than on my rim.. Dont ask me why! And I could see those.. And smell them! haha My garage also smells like new rubber.

then you must not buy anything online? lol because websites never show the exact product you are getting, only a picture representation of the product.

anyways, new rubber smells good

No I buy things online wthout seeing them many times. Like OEM parts.. I know what I am getting. I even bought a used SRS car part.. (but I wouldnt do that again because you cant use an SRS unit with a permanent DTC) . and 1 or 2 I did return because they were not as advertised. Fortunately, ebay has a good return policy. But still, 600 dollars worth of tires is not like buying a $20 item on ebay, sight unseen. I bought some NEW fog lights on ebay and they shipped me some used one that someone damaged. Ebay refunded my money because the vendor did not reply.

But if you buy new tires, there is no taking them back! homie! haha Me cast eyes on tires. Make chad happy. haha Big purchase.. must see...

This is incorrect.

The S04 is a summer tire it sits above the RE760 in terms of performance.

Differences:
S04 has better but has less thread life.
RE760 has better thread life but less grip.

So I have had these tires a while now, and lets just say I have contemplated replacing them already and selling these for like 250 for 4 tires. The handling is fine..But the only thing I dont like is they tend to make more noise when going over bumps and the ride is a bit harder and I dont really care for the way they look. My Hankook EVO's looked better and rode better. They might have rode softer due to softer side walls, but It seemed to match the TL ok. So I was thinking of the EVO2. EVO2 might be better than EVO.

Interesting point here: I already had to plug 1 tire. Suprisingly, even though the EVO's had softer sidewalls, the bottoms of those tires are super hard to drill out with a file. Like my hand would be KILLING me by the time I got it filed out enough to insert the plug.. But not so on the S04! The S04's may have a firmer sidewall, but the bottoms of those a Child could poke a hole in the bottom or FILE out the hole where a foreign obstacle had punctured a hole. In fact it made me Scared how EASY it was to drill out the hole where I hit a nail.. Like, it seemed somewhat detrimental it was so easy to file out.. So, I think the EVO's were actually safer to drive over because they are likely less "penetrable". Kinda made me think there was a quality issue. But I was glad I didnt break my hand in the process.

Anyway, whatever I guess.

I have the S04 pole positions. They are a Max Performance Summer tire. Super Grippy and discontinued. Tire rack recently had them at close out pricing.

Happy reading...Monsters of Grip: Nine Summer-Performance Tires Tested Comparison Tests - Page 9 - Car and Driver

They are still on Bridgestones website.. for whatever that is worth.

Maybe for the reason they are "grippy" , that it seemed like the plug was easy drill out.. Like soft rubber..? Just a thought.

had 2 sets of S04 in 245/45/17. got 25-30k miles out of each set. good grip. firm ride. my mom has the re760 on her TL-S and there is a definite difference in the ride quality.

now i'm on bfg gforce sport comp2. more forgiving ride. they squeal a little bit in the same turns where the S04 did not. but i expect twice the life out of the bfg. had the comp1 on my 2003 civic si and got close to 60k miles out of a set.
