Tires for TLs up North
 

When I purchased my TL last year, it had two Bridgestone RE960 Pole Positions on the front and the factory Michelins at the rear. We didn't have a bad winter last year so tires weren't a major concern. Now I need new rubber. So do I buy 4 new RE960s at about $800 or get something else at a reduced cost? The local tire shop is saying the Bridgestones are too high, look into the new Eagle GT or Dunlop Signature.

I have been searching and reading all of these tire threads, trying to make a decision and everyone has their favorite tire. My problem is that what works for the guys in CA and FL really doesn't work for us guys in the North that may get a good amount of snow/ice. I know nothing beats a dedicated snow tire, but two sets of tires are not in the budget. I'm leaning towards the Bridgestones, but I really don't want to spend $800 if I don't have to. Any A/S tire is a trade off when it comes to ice/snow, but take a look at the Continental ContiExtreme Contact. Never had them, but decent overall ratings along with good snow reports, good tread design, 400 wear rating and only $110.

I agree about the trade off.

I put ContiPro Contacts on my wife's Volvo at the recommendation of the local tire shop. I'm not too crazy about them since they mke the sidewall look huge, but she thinks they are ok.
