Tire sizes for 18 inch wheels
Okay, just looking for opinions, here, really.
I have had both 235/40 and 245/40 - 18's on my previous TL with Aspec rims. With my TL-S, I've now settled on new 18 wheels and am having tires installed tomorrow. So, my question to you all is this:
The 245 is less than a half inch wider, so it does provide a little additional protection against curb rash, etc., but other than that, is there any other benefit? And as far as appearance, once on the car, there really isn't a noticeable difference. The reason I ask is because the 235/40 tire is 76 bucks and the 245/40 is 129. With warranty, install and tax, that's a difference of 250 bucks. Is there any reason why that would be worth it? Anyone?
Thanks,
jb

The 40 number on both sizes is called the aspect ratio and this number represents the height of the sidewall relative to the width of the tire. So while the aspect ratio is the same for 235/40 and 245/40 tires, the sidewall is actually taller on the 245 tire since it is cheaper. For example: 235/40/18 and 215/45/18 are actually the exact same tire circumference. This means that getting the 245 tire would be more comfortable but less responsive compared to the 235 tire. Not sure by how much though.
