Tire Size Question

I am replacing my wife's 05 stock rims with after market 18x7.5 and would like to know if it is ok to install 235/45 or 235/50 on them. I have been reading and most people put 235/40 but this is for my wife and she hates riding in my integra because there is so little rubber to cushion the ride. The TL is not lowered, so the question is, with 45 or 50 rub? And does anyone have pictures with either of these tires already installed on their TL?

I was also concerned about sidewall thickness when I got my new tires. If you went with 235/50, it'd be way too much of a diameter(than stock) and may risk rubbing and obviously throwing off your odometer. Stock diameter of 235-45-17 totals 25.32 inches, 235/50/18 is 27.25 inches. That's about 2 whole inches taller than stock. The best suggestion I can see is 245/40/18. It offers the most sidewall but within stock diameter of 25 inches. With a 7.5 width rim, you probably won't rub but more importantly..staying within diameter is best. On another note, I don't feel too much of a stiffness going to a bigger rim just one size. There's still plenty of cushion for a comfy ride and I have A-spec suspension.

Here's a breakdown of measurements:

tire size * total diameter(inches) * sidewall tallness(inches)
235/45/17 * 25.32 * 4.16
235/40/18 * 25.40 * 3.70
235/45/18 * 26.32 * 4.16
235/50/18 * 27.25 * 4.62
245/40/18 * 25.71 * 3.85

I don't know where you got that but it's a rough estimate and does not compute. I did the calculation myself: 235mm/25.4mm=9.25 "x.45=4.16", 4.16"+4.16"+17"=25.32". Here's a sample of a diameter calculator: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...e.jsp?techid=7

It's because you calculated it from the assumed "standard" dimensions. The measured size of the stock 235/45-17 tire is a diameter of 25.6".

Direct measurement >>>> calculation.

The tire calulators assume the tire section width is exactly 235mm and that the section height is EXACTLY 45% of that. The assumption is rarely true.

Look here:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....42V3&tab=Specs - EL42 = 25.5" diameter

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....M4HX&tab=Specs = Pilot MXM4 = 25.6" Diameter

Ah, ok. The measurements listed on those pages are still estimates because the diameter of those 2 tires are different. Good news, is that they still fall within range of stock size of 25". Interestingly Tirerack does have a warning: WARNING: These calculations (and those provided by all online tire dimension calculators) only reflect nominal tire dimensions, which are often subtly or substantially different than the tire's actual physical size and/or the dimensions provided by the tire manufactures.

Thanks guys for all the info, I think I am going to go with 235/45 on the rims. Now, does anyone have a tire that they prefer? I was thinking of the Yokohama ENvigor Ultra High Perfomance All Season

The two most popular Performance All-Seasons on the board right now seem to be Conti DWS and Michilen Pilot Sport A/S Plus. Bridgestone 960 AS have been popular for a long time too.

I put a good bit of stock in the Tire Rack Surveys. They build over a lot of time, miles and users.
