Tire Sidewall defect?

Hey all, Hope you help me diagnosis my problem. The problem is that recently ( about a month ago ) i've been getting a severe vibration in the steering wheel when driving at speeds above 70mph. Also, I don't recall ever hitting a major pothole, just minor road imperfections that I couldnt avoid. I got a balance job done with a hunters gps9700 road force machine and everything came out perfect but the problem still existed. So to rule out the problem i decided to put my stockies back on. And what do you know.. the problem went away..

Upon further inspection, this is what I discovered. Could this be my problem?

looks like a tire defect and/or not seated properly.

yeah, but if it wasn't seated properly in the first place, wouldn't I have this problem in the beginning as well? For the 1st 1/2 of riding on these they were perfectly fine, this problem occurred about a month ago. Tire pressure was always around 35-37PSI.

i had a tire that had something similar. i shrugged it off and kept driving it. then one day, in a hurry to get home for christmas, going 90mph, watching family guy, i just picked up a phone call and the fucker blew. was a crazy few seconds, but managed to get pulled over safely without incident. scared the fuck outta me though. it was a studless snow tire. at first I noticed it and though it wasnt seated all the way. it was indeed a defect. it was on the inside as well so I couldnt keep an eye on it like I normally would. it obviously turned into something else. when it let go, it looked like someone drilled a 2" hole with a holesaw. I had a good warranty and got it replaced for free, but that didnt unshit my pants.

thats something an experienced tire shop guy would notice, and probably wouldnt let it get out the shop, but with me, a young noob was at the helm and unfortuantly, I didnt know any better myself. now Im on the lookout for that kinda crap.

if it were me, Id take it back where you got it and tell them theres an issue with that tire and youd like it replaced. if thats not an option, Id at least get it swapped to the outside where you can at least watch it more closely.

Looks as though the rim is scraped right under it as well. I'm wondering if the tire wasn't damaged during install.

Yeah, Im currently in the process of speaking to the website i got it from. So far they are saying I hit a pothole is the cause of it but I haven't provided them the pictures yet, Just basing from my explanation. They said if that's the case than its not covered..

Yeah, i see from the pic as well but it looks like that might have been a weight thats been removed? I got them mounted by a friend who works at a honda dealer. I was watching him during the process and it looked like he mounted them with caution.

Would running 225/40 increase the chances of damaging a tire?

This is a really good point. ive seen rookie tire installed rip up the edge of a tire and youd never know cause its seated inside.

my main dislike from buying tires online. you cant go to the store and make a scene in front of customers to get what you want.

It does resemble a scratch from a a weight.

usually if a hole is bad enough to jack up the tire, your rim will see some damage from it too, but theres always varibles.

you always run more risk of damage with a lower profile tire, but they should stand up to daily abuse and a pothole here and there shouldnt ruin a tire.

I have found over the years when Ive tried lesser brand tires that they seem to get more flats and just overall have more issues than the bigger name brands. I have never got a flat with a bfg, nitto, or toyo tire. Could be coinsidence, but all the coopers, federals and lower known brands always seem to go flat if you look at them wrong.

the lesser brands also seem to take a lot more weights to balance out. last set of nittos I installed balanced with no weights but one, and it was the smallest weight they had available.

That my friend is a shifted belt inside. It put its out of round, and it could look very small or large.

Exactly.

Update: After getting off the phone with the tire company, they directed me to a local tire shop to have them inspect the tire. After inspecting it the shop came to an agreement that it was a manufacturer defect and when they took the tire off, they noticed bubbles on the inside. I also had them inspect the other 3 making sure everything was okay and those came out okay besides the one. The tire manufacture and shop spoke over the phone and decided to replace my tire for free.

Problem solved
