Tire changing - avoiding wheel damage?

I am getting ready to do my first tire change on my '04 TL and am concerned about wheel damage during tire replacement.

Any suggestions on questions that I should ask about possible wheel damage during tire replacement? Should I expect the tire shop to be responsible if they scratch or scrape the finish on the painted side of the wheels?

Thanks for your input.
