Exclamation For these who moved from 17 to 18 or 19 or 20

Hi,

I know many people here got new wheel/ tires set. I am about to do this too.
But what if :

You are traveling somewhere away from home (I travel on TL a lot: Canada, Boston, Washington and so on) or even you are on daily commute and you got nail in any tire (very common thing to happen, right...)
What are you going to do?
You can not use spare tire (due to side difference, [may me someone on 18 can, but not if you run on 19 or 20])

Or what if you bend a wheel (you will loose air very fast and there is no way to continue your trip.

If you stay on 17 all above will not affect you at all, which is very serious deal.

Please share your experience/opinion ...

Why can't you use your spare tire if you're running on 18, 19, or even 20? The overall diameter should be pretty close to stock 17" (except 20") even if you're on 18 or 19" wheels. Also your spare is already in smaller overall diameter than your stock 17". So you still can use your spare even if you're running bigger wheels.

Yes, lower profile tires are more prone to bent/crack wheels However, your stock 235/45 R17 tires are not exactly high profile either.

Bent wheel doesn't necessarily mean you're losing air pressure either.

IMO, larger wheels are OK to use on long trips. But be advised that the wheels and tires are generally more expensive to replace. If you're uncomfortable with it, you probably have to stay with your OEM wheels.

Yeah, no problem with 19's and the spare...if people used the right size tire for 20's, there would be no problem with them, either. But, the increase in tire diameter by using the popular size tire with 20's wouldn't be a big deal for a limited amount of time...ie, get your tire fixed/replaced ASAP...but you'd do that no matter what size your wheels were, though, right?
