Running different tire sizes in the front and back

Hi,

I bought my 05 TL just about a week ago. The car has 245/45/18 tires on A-Spec rims.

The rear tires are almost gone, the front still has about 70% thread left.

A friend of mine has a pair of 235/40/18 that's about brand new, he's willing to give them to me. I know the 245/45/18 is about 1.3 inches larger in diameter.

Is it going to be ok to run the smaller 235/40/18 in the front, and the larger 245/45/18 in the back.

Thanks in advanced!

I would not do it. One thing I do know is that it will mess up the ABS system with the front and rear wheels spinning at different speeds.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell how is it going to mess up the ABS System? Is it going to stop working when I need it? Or is it going to start throwing error codes to the car computer?

Thanks!

Both. The front and rear wheels will be spinning at different speeds, so the car could deactivate the ABS all together if it can't get the proper readings.

What about running 2 different brands of tires on each side? ie, one brand on front/back driver side and a different brand on passenger side front/back. Does that affect anything?

That is fine as long at they all are the same size i.e. 245/45/18 on all 4 corners no matter who makes them.

As the difference is about 5%, I don't believe it would deactivate the ABS, but could cause the system to activate each time the brakes are applied as the RPM variation, front/rear, would indicate an unsafe condition exists. Have heard reports that different diameters have been used with no problems, but that wasn't on an Acura, and I wasn't a witness to the reported cases.

Stick with the same size to be sure.

Different brands = different tire design, tread pattern, speed and load rating. That might matter.

When you think about it tires are the only thing conecting you to the road. While at really slow speeds it might not matter, once things speed up you might want all 4 of those little rubber patches to do the most they can.
