A question to modders about spare tires

I saw a custom van with rims and a matching spare rim on the back. Do you TLer's with rims have a matching spare rim or do you have the donut that comes with the car. I assume those of you who lower your cars have a regular size spare.

No need for a "custom" combination. I'd venture to say most have the doughnut, as a matching wheel/tire spare would be quite costly, let alone trying to fit it in the comparment, and with a staggered setup..........

not to hijack the thread but, whats the max size tire that can fit in the wheel well. Without the board bulging up?

A "matching" full size spare would be ideal, but not practical, as Turbonut stated. You wouldn't be able to fit it in the spare tire compartment, either.

Then, you also run into the issue of making sure the spare has even tire wear to match the other four tires that are being run. This used to be done when tires used to be cross-rotated, but not anymore.

so how bad would it be for the car to put a 17" spare on if an after market different sized tire blew?

My first question to you would obviously be, "What size is your aftermarket wheel?"

But, even if you're riding on 19's, it'll work for a couple of miles. Go slowly to the nearest tire shop.

I see. There are 2 big issues if you go long distances on the spare:

1. It's not designed for long distance driving
2. The unevenness of the spare as compared to a bigger diameter wheel will cause uneven tire wear over a long distance.

If the diameters are different and the flat is on the front, put the spare on the rear and then the rear on the front, that is providing they all the full size tires on the car are of the same diameter. This way it will take the wear and tear off the drivetrain esp. with a limited slip diff.

also just as a note, if you upgrade your brakes to the brembos OR get a BBK, it's advisable that you invest in the TL-S spare tire so the spare can clear the caliper. Also it's good to keep a screwdriver or something of the nature handy to pry off a hub ring adapter if the bore on your new wheels isn't the same as the old ones, otherwise you won't be able to get the spare on with the adapter still on the hub.

Just another reason to put the spare on the back and move the back to the front if you don't have the 17" x 4" spare.
