Pirelli Nero M&S vs. Falken Ziex 512
At the risk of belaboring the topic of replacement tires, I've boiled it down to the Pirellis and Falkens for my auto trans TL. I live in North NJ so snow traction is a concern. I don't drive hard very often. A comfortable and quiet ride is more important to me than breakneck handling. No doubt there are some comprises to be made on an all season tire. Looking for the best 'all around' tire for my needs.
I can't find a side by side comparison of these two tires. Tirerack.com gives the Pirellis high marks across the board. Consumer Report (haven't seen their review of M&S tires) apparently give the Falkens a favorable review.
What do you think?

I have the Pirelli's also and am very happy. They do flat spot a little on cold mornings. But, once they warm up, they handle great and are pretty smooth. They are a poor man's Pilot Sports A/S. I may try the pilots next time.

Pirelli v.Falken
Thanks for the advise. I'm going with my instinct, spend a few more $ & getting the Pirellis. For what its worth, Falken dealers in North Jersey are pretty scarce.

I think you are looking at the ultra high performance summer tire category (entirely appropriate for FL). This thread was about all season tires with the emphasis on snow traction, and comfort. While the Eagle sticks like glue in summer conditions, it is uh, not fun in the snow, and comfort (both harshness and tire slap over expansion joints) is not its strong suit either. There is no "best" tire. There are tires that are best for a particular purpose or in a particular category (such as wear, or adhesion). No tire will be best in all categories since there are trade offs that must be made in the design faze...
Just a thought,

I think you'll like them. I am in Wilmington DE (similar conditions) and love mine so far.

Consider the Nokian WR series tire. Available on the net from Tirefactory. $180 a piece to your door. I've had them on my 2002 Jetta and couldn't be happier. I won't hesitate to use them on my 05TL if the stock tires are as unacceptable as many here claim.

I got the Pirellis over Thanksgiving weekend. After 500 miles or so all I can say is "wow." These tires are great. The improvement in handling & ride has is dramatic. They also demostrate just how lame the stock EL42's are.
Little more road feel than I'm used to. This is my first set of ultra performance tires. The 'fun' factor has gone up considerably. If you want a soft & quiet ride that isolates you fom the road a little more, I recommend the Bridgestone LS-Z. I had LS-H's on my prior car, a Volvo. Great tires if you want a 'plush' ride and don't mind giving up a little handling in the turns. The LS-Z's are also about $75 to $100 more per tire. Can't beat the Pirellis for value.

If you see red X's, do a refresh. My ISP, Verizon DSL has been fukked up with this for a while.

I just put on the Goodyear Eagle Ultra Grip GW3's on my TL and they are really great.
A little smoother than the Falken ZIEX 512's. No snow experience yet.
For a snow tire these handle very well in the dry, are quiet and great looking.

Did you have the Falkens on the same car just before?

When I got my '04TL I bought a new set of Falken Torque 5 gunmetal wheels with the Falken tires. For winter I traded in the almost new BS's for the Goodyears on the OEM rims.
