I used BASF RM Diamont paint on mine, same stuff some of the manufacturers use. Sealer, base , clear after the prepping. The clear I used is a high quality 2 component product, clear/hardener. My method allowed me to keep the tires on, and not have to rebalance the wheels. The prepping was most of work, I pulled the rubber nibs along the edge out with small needle nose pliers. I abraded the edge very well, and didn't get too much paint down into the crevice, so there will be no problems later on. Powder coating is ideal, but regular painting is just as good if done right.

I've heard the Dupli-color wheel paint is good, which is what I'm going to use on my factory wheels in a few weeks. I used some Wurth German wheel paint on my 540i and it looked great...perfect match and still holding up after years.

I did alot of hand sanding and used a small orbital sander with 100 grit to take out BAD curb damage. I then primed with 3 light coats of Krylon's best medium grey primer, then I put on 2 light coats of grey metalic Duplicolor paint followed with a medium-heavy coat of grey paint, then I put 2 light coats of Dup clear followed by a medium-heavy final coat of clear. They turned out AWESOME/FANTASTIC.

Nice work powerflow, I would like my rims to have a bit more of that gunmetal look myself.
Cleaned the wheels/tires
Wax/grease remover, solvent wash
DA sander w/ 500 dry, 500 dry by hand, gray scuff pad in the curvy areas
Washed the wheels again to remove sanding scum/dust, also used the scuff pad wet to break up the scum/dust, ect
Prep work and masking
Wax/grease remover solvent, tack cloth, blow the surface
1 coat of primer sealer, flash
3 med light coats of base, flash in between
2 med heavy coats of clear, flash in between

Thanks Fellas. It look a whole days work by myself, all in all it was a ton of work. I have a bad knee so I sure don't want to do it again anytime soon. I was pooped at the end, started early and ended at 11pm or so. If you like beer, make sure you a a few, you'll get thirsty! I'll do a mini-write up in the other wheel DIY thread if I get time.

I've used the duplicolor bronze wheel coating. It came out pretty decent, but doesn't really hold up to new england weather here. I will have to eventually redo mines as the paints chipping off.

Those 2 paints are not really comparable. The paint I used is a professional auto paint line, requires pro spray equipment, paint gun, air compressor, ect. The Duplicolor is a spray paint can.
Any high quality auto paint like BASF RM is going to be more durable than spray can paint.

SEM makes all types of paint. They are very highly regarded in the automotive industry. A little more expensive, but worth it. When I repaint my wheels later this year, I'll be using SEM paint; no cheap stuff from Autozone/PepBoys/wherever.

Ah, you're painting the wheels currently on your car...you might want to go ahead without me. I guess I technically fall into a the wheel whore category; I currently have two sets of aftermarket wheels. I'm refinishing one of them. I stripped them last year, but never got around to painting them. By prep work, I mean stuff I need to do before priming/painting; I want to fill in the indentations and engraving on the wheel faces. Once that's done, I'll prime, paint, and clearcoat them (priming will be immediatly after the prep work, painting can be done at any point after that, still debating the clearcoat). Hell, I haven't even picked what color yet (well, specific color; I know the generic color). But if we end up painting around the same time, I'm definitely down.
