Has anyone tried powdercoating the OEM wheels to say, flat-black or gunmetal? Many people have sent them in for chrome finishing, but does anyone think that powdercoating the rims flat black will look good? I think the oem wheels look pretty nice if the car is lowered down over them and just wondering if anyone has done it to them before?

Thinking about powder but have not gone there yet. A powder coat shop I talked to said the wheels would have to be stripped before powder coating else the powder could blister. A body shop then told me our wheels are painted base / clear with wet paint.

What I am getting at is you could start with two wheels and paint with a base clear witout stripping. If you like the color and the finish do all of them in base clear or powder. If not you have not wasted much time or money and the paint would not be too hard to remove.

As for color, I think flat black will clash with the gloss black trim on the windows. Gunmetal or smokey black or a black chrome may be nice especially on a silver, sand or white car.

Can you explain why powder would be preferable to base clear. I understand that the bonding is better but there must be other good reasons to powder.

I've been thinking about getting some paint on the OEM rims for a while now... I think it's a great way to go... With my NBP, I'd love to get something in the gunmetal range of colors...
