New Wheel Project: Fixing damaged 2 piece wheels
This is the headache an amazing deal can give you.
Wheel: Rays Lexion X503
Size: 19x9 19x10
Offset: +20 f/r
Type: 2 piece Welded
Current Finish: Grey w/ diamond cut face and polished stainless lip
Future Finish: TBD
The Good: I could not pass up the price for these wheels. Bought them locally from an ISF owner.
The Bad: The two front wheels were curbed hard. This caused damage to the stainless steel lip jacket on both wheels. One was folded back the the other is wrinkled. Neither can be repaired and must be refinished.
Task 1: I took the wheels to a local wheel shop. He told me we will have to rip the stainless steel lip jacket off of both wheels before we can refinish them. (gonna be a major headache) So tomorrow I am going to heat the lip up to soften the adhesive material and I'm going to start prying away praying that when the welded the face on they did not pinch the lip in the process or else I will have to carefully cut the lip at the face. Here's the pics. I will update this as the project continues

Got wheel number one done today. About to start on number two. It took alot of work to get them apart. I only broke 1 screw driver though. Going to try to get the other one apart now but heres some pics. Next week Ill take em to a specialty shop and see if they can remove the hardware. If the hardware is pressed in and not screwed in I will have to figure out what to do about that then.
The wheel with the jacket off
The caulk residue used to hold the jacket to the wheel
The Destroyed Jacket

Update 3/31/11
I can't take the wheel bolts out to have the powder coated. I can't seem to find the Triple Square socket that fits. A M8 is too small and a M9 is too big.
I decided since I can't get the wheel bolts out to have the wheels powder coated I am going to go ahead and polish the lips. The down fall is the amount of time it is going to take but i think the end result will be worth it especially since I have time to kill till I can get my suspension ordered.
The hard part will be right at the point where the face and lip meet so I'm going to have to be very careful but I will be happier than if I have to coat them black. Im going to start tonite on stripping the rest of the glue off of them. Since the lips have grooves cut in them from when the wheel was manufactured I will have to start at 80 grit and I will work my way up to 3000 grit before starting to polish.
I'll be using a high speed angle grinder with 8 inch pads starting with a cotton spiral sewn buff and brown tripoli compound and I'll finish with a loose cotton buff and white compound for the finish. I'll use a cone buff to get right up against the edge of the face. I may try to find something to put on the face to protect it from losing it's grey finish. There is a clear spray available that is used by painters that can be peeled off afterwards.
Let the work begin! Ill update as I go.
