Mounting tires on OEM and ASPEC wheels

I was getting my tires mounted today and I noticed that tire guy was mounting my ASPEC wheels with the face pointing up.

I had my aftermarket wheels with a dish mounted last time by these guys and they mounted the wheels faced down.

I asked him how come he doesn't mount the ASPEC wheels facing down so it doesn't mess up the edges of the wheel when he removes the tires with the bar. He said you can't do that with these wheels, you can only mount aftermarket 2pc and 3pc wheels facing downward.

Is this true? If yes, anybody know the reason for mounting OEM style wheels facing up?

Just wanted to see if he was BS-ing me or not.

The tech was too lazy to take the extra step in doing it correctly without damaging the wheels. He could placed the rim face down if he had used something to protect the lip of the wheel. A shop I went to before used duct tape on the mounting machine were the wheel would rub if left unprotected. I don't how to explain it but I watched a tech put duct tape on the mounting machine, lay a chrome 24" rim on there, and as the machines arms closed together, the tape protected the wheel lip from chipping. I always ask them to do my wheels this way (oem or aftermarket).

edit: now that I think about it, most places will install that way because if the back lip of the rim messes up, then most people will never know.

The guy put the rubber pieces on the the each of the 4 claw holders here to prevent scratches on the outer rim.

I just don't know why he couldn't put rim faced down though.

No, face up is perfectly fine. Almost all the shops here do it face up, with regular 1 piece wheels anyways. Tire mounting will not damage the face in any way if the tech knows what he's doing. Mounting it with face down risks scratches from the machine claws. I know you can put padding but with some spoke designs, it won't even be possible face down

This! If the tech knows what he is doing then he wont damage the wheel. But its rare to find a tech that takes pride in his work anymore.
