I need enlightenment on tire size selection

Hello all... Ok so I ordered rims last night 18x8 40offset, my question for you guys is : Is it more so preference in which size tire should be wrapped around the rim? Its recommended that I go with either 225 or 235 but what is the difference between the two? And what size tired are you guys with 18inch rims running? Are stretched tires unsafe? they look hot but it looks like the damn rim is gonna pop out of the tire.

225 can be mount into that rim just fine, 235 or 225 is the measurement of how wide your tire are. 235 is only 10 mm wider than 225 so that would be 5mm wider than each side. 225 are great if you driving in the snow, it give you better gas mileage and easier to move around in snow (in theory). 235 offer you more grip (surface contact to the road) but having heavier weight (do to extra rubber). I would go with 235 if you are living in southern climate and 225 for driving in the snow.

+1 on 235s. I recommend 235/40/18 for the wheels you ordered.

You don't need to worry about stretching tires since your offset is +40.

I'm in the process of buying wheels with the same specs (18x8 +40) and I'm going with 245/40/18 tires. I have 235/40/18 tires on my 18x8 A Spec rims and wish I would have gone with a 245 series tire instead. The tire sits flush to the wheel. It's partially personal preference, but I'm sure there are performance characteristics involved, etc.

Good deal, man. I considered that tire too. What wheels do you have?

Guess it depends on the look you want, a wide aggressive tire or a narrower one as many on this site desire. Those Dunlop tires only have 7.7" wide tread so I guess the narrow look is desired, but a big difference when compared to the same size Bridgestone 760 with a 8.5" tread. I personally like a tire that is wide rather than one that looks like a motorcycle tire from behind, but this naturally is personal opinion, so I would have gone with a 245/40-18, same height/diameter as the OE tire but with a 8.9" tread, big difference. It's like seeing a Vette with skinny tires, it just doesn't make sense, at least to me.

Hmmmm point taken! And this is completely understandable I too like a wide tire at least on the rear. So many things to consider when picking wheels I didn't even look at the width I just looked at how the rim sat in the tire. Well I'm stuck with my purchase and I'm pretty satisfied with it unless when I go to the tire shop to have the rims installed they have a wider tire that I can trade my dunlops in for. We'll see.

When I bought Volk RE-30"s in 18"x8" rims, I put 245/40/19" tires. Looked better, a tad wider and a tad taller then 235/40/18" tires.

I prefer 245/40 tires on 18" wheels.

I prefer 245/35 tires on 19" rims

Sorry, didn't realize you already purchased the tires.

Probably a typo error as it should be 245/40/18” tires on the wheels and as far as your size preferences

Another vote for wide tires. I want the most rubber on the ground and the most traction possible whether it's for safety or performance. I've run a 255/40 on the stock rims since the stock tires wore out.

No 245/40 series on 18" wheels = 245/40/18"

No 245/35 series on 19" wheels = 245/35/19"

Same height and width,
