Honest Opinion on Tire Choice

I have run through two sets of Kumho ECSTA ASX tires in 40,000 miles. I am looking for a change. Reading through the various forums out there (including this one), I believe I have come to two choices. One has a warranty, the other does not. Please chime in and assist with the decision process.

Goodyear Eagle F1 All Season 235.45.17 $179
Yokohama YK520 235.45.17 $137

(Sacramento, CA Area)

If there are any other options, please let me know. I am planning on heading out to Discount Tire this weekend as my Kumho's are 2/32 and 0/32. OUCH!

Many thanks in advance for all of the replies.

I have the Bridgestone RE050 PP but they are pricey. Great handling tire in wet and dry. BUT....if I had to do it all over again, I would look at an all season tire because I've slowed to a lot to save on gas and almost never push those tires hard.

Heard some good things about the 912's that swoosh is talking about. Think I saw a good write up on them in Consumer Reports too for what it's worth.

I prefer to go with high end brand names. I know that doesn't mean they are the "best", but it gives me peace of mind.

I had some Yoko's on the '02 and hated them. Can't stand the Michelin MXM4 either.

Bridgestone PP 960 AS are on the '02 now and are much better.

Right now, for me, the BS 960 AS, GY F1 AS and Michelin Pilot Sport AS look to be the best All-Season "performance" tires on the market.

i was also a brand name person.....but its not like falken/toyo/yoko/ are not off brands or knock off's......modified magazine a hardcore maganize for sports fanatics is full of toyo/falken/yoko's.....check: http://www.modified.com/ ......only reason being they have been tested and re-tested and commented and criticized......they just dont come out and start selling......

my buddy just got 4 falken 912(40k warranty) for less than 500 shipped...

i would check discounttires store on ebay...

i think you will get your tires slightly cheaper and free shipping

my 245-40-18 goodyear f1 all seasons were 712 shipped(just ordered them today

and since your tires are slightly smaller they will be slightly cheaper

there is another site they have limited selection but good prices...

I would check some NITTO'S 555. I had a car with soma falken and in dry they run great, but when it rain they are truly bad. You could feel the tire going on top of the water instead of through it.

I am in the OPs area- we get hard heavy rain- sudden downpours, trips to light snow maybe- and hot 110 degree summers - like right now
My 01 is on 18 inch General Exclaim UHP tires

Tirerack tested them as summer tires and rated them number 1
Note- summer tires also means rain in their design and hwo well they channel water- thats why all the v groove styles
the UHP tires are actually marked/certified/rated M&S- all season because of the tread design and how well it works
The rubber-silica type compunds used in summer tires are happier in the warm- above freezing- thats what summer tires are about- the rubber and how it works in cold temps
but I will take mine into light snow for trip to reno when needed- even with the cable chains required!
In the wet the tires think its dry- happy to push as hard as I am.
Check them out ~100 bucks a tire, AA traction wet (thats the best) 300?320 treadwear
Available in real tire stores in the area too
Not quite goodyear F1s but I am happy for the price, comfort- and performance
The wife likes them too-!!!
married guys know thats the most important thing~

here is the spec an running.....

Falken ZIEX912 - 235/40/18....360 treadwear.....UHPAS (Ultra High Performance All Season)

Well about Dry and Wet Traction.....she sticks.....well there is a 6 miles strecth which is a friggin rollercoaster ride......and me and my friends kinda race there.....i have never fish-tailed or slipped.....some of my friends have fish-tailed and even hit a 360 because of no grip......

About Snow.....I live in St Louis, MO.....we dont get snow here......we get hail.....and there is ice formation on the ground.....this snow was my tires first now and well.....she handled beautifully.....no slipping and sliding......there was this hill where everyone was stuck.....and i was too......i turned the vsa off so that i could rev the car a little more and damn i was offfff......

am getting ZEIX 912 for my stock rims for the winter and i think will get Falken Azenis Rt615 for the summer

OP, I just purchased 4 Falken 912s at Discount Tire. Got them to price match their discounttiredirect.com price of $104/tire.

For the tires, dismounting, mounting, balancing and a replacement plan for the life of the tire (if they can't repair the tire, they will replace with a new one), I paid $559 out the door.

Some people will say you can get them mounted/balance for much less but... oh well.

Driven only about 10 miles on them but so far, they are very quiet. I had Yoko ES100s on them before and they were a bit louder than the 912s.

new tires take about 100 miles to get the slippery mold release agents off the surface and the whatevers cooked out of the tread, sort of like bedding in brakes
They get better with a weeks use, then you can push them and say how well they work
