Full Size Spare Tire: Steel Wheel & Tire Size Recommendations

I would like to get a steel wheel with a full size tire to use as a spare with my 2004 TL for a road trip. I know it won't fit in the stock spare tire well, so it will just be inside the trunk during my trip. The plan is to have the stock spare tire as a backup plan.

Could any of you guys who have purchased a full size steel wheel and tire set to use as a spare tire or who know someone who did tell me what vehicle model, size of wheel/tire you or the person you know ended up going with? I am not planning on getting a matching stock aluminum wheel. A plain steel wheel should be enough.

The stock OEM wheels are so cheap nowadays, if it were me, I would just pick up a used one on Craigslist.

I have noticed the lower price of the stock alloy (not aluminum! ) wheels online. There has not been anything on craigslist in my area, and even the local junkyards don't have those wheels. The reason why I was asking about the steel wheels is because it is a lot easier to find them at junkyards. In my area they are sold for $50 including the tire, and I thought a 16" steel wheel from a Honda Accord, for example, or even from another vehicle model/brand might be good enough.

I will keep an eye on Craigslist in case something comes up. I know there are brand new allow wheels on eBay for about $120 shipped. I would have to add another $150 for a new tire unless I find a used one in good shape.

Maybe post a WTB thread in the Black Market to see what our community has laying around?

Doubt you'll ever find a steel wheel the same configuration as the Tl wheel.
Don't know where you're located in MS, but Arguelles in Biloxi has 2, curbed,
$50 each. 1-800-289-4567

I am about 60 miles north of Biloxi, and I was in that area on Saturday (07/02). I wish I had seen your message then. I would have checked that place out and see about those wheels. I should be heading back that way in a couple of weeks. Thank you for sharing that info. I do appreciate that. It is ok if the wheel has some curb marks as long as it is not bent/cracked.

As far as the steel wheel fitment, I didn't check the offset, bolt pattern, etc of a any 16" steel wheel. However, on paper a 215/55/R16 tire/wheel combination has a diameter that is very close to the stock alloy wheel/tire diameter. The difference is 0.02". However, like you mentioned above, I don't know if I can actually put that tire/wheel together and use them with a TL.
