Front shocks - installation question

Thanks to the very helpful DIY here (https://acurazine.com/forums/3g-tl-problems-fixes-114/torque-spec-shock-assembly-3g-garage-d-091-a-633039/), I have begun replacing the original front shocks on my 2007 TL Base (80,000 miles) with KYB Excel shocks.

As I was taking the strut out, a ring that slips around the outside of the shock came off. The ring has a tab on it that is supposed to fit into the groove where you tighten the lower fork around the shock.

The KYB replacement did not come with this ring. Instead, it has an arrow-like piece welded to it that appears to serve the same purpose, but it is not a ring.

What is the purpose of the ring? Do I need to reuse it with the KYB shock?

Thanks in advance for any clarification you can provide.

its supposed to stay pretty tight on the oem shock and shouldnt come off normally. however no big deal if it does, you can hammer it back on the oem shock. it is not transferred over on the kyb
