Dumb Tire+Rim question

I'm currently running my OEM rims with winter tires. I want a summer setup. So i went to discounttiredirect and priced out some stuff. The picture below lists what I'm going to buy. Am i missing anything to have a fully functioning setup? Thanks for looking!

No dumb questions, but here's my take. I'd go with 245/45-17 to be the same OD as the original Michelins and I also get another set of wheels that are 8" minimum in width, same as OE, not the 7.5".
Not saying that the combination you have chosen won't work, but IMHO it's just not the best setup, especially if you're spending a large amount of cash.

Hey Turbo,

I'm pretty sure the OEM tires that came with my car were 235's. In regards to 7.5 vs 8" in rim width. I'm not sure yet what the advantage is yet

I don't think my question is currently being addressed. I'm not asking about size or width in rims. I just need to know if I go to the tire shop to have them mounted. Will I have everything in order for me to just drive off after they balance and mount the rims.

Thanks

Those tires are garbage man. Spend a little more and get something good. There are plenty of threads on tires. My recommendation is the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo tires. They are a great summer tire IMO.

Instead of a blanket statement. Can you provide some more feedback instead of saying they are garbage? It's like saying the Anthracite color is garbage, pick a better color of a car. I'm sorry but once again no one can answer a question. Thought this place was suppose to be a site where you can ask a question then you get an answer.

The problem with your question is that everyone has a different preference of tire. Therefore, I could give you my opinion of every tire you mention and even with personal experience and the next guy will tell you I'm a fucking idiot. You get what I'm saying?

Looks to me like you've got all your bases covered. Wheels, Tires and a mounting & balancing package. Rock on.

If you're looking for a summer tire that will provide extra good traction while cornering, don't buy the General tires. I have used them, I have had friends who have had them and they do not give substantial grip while cornering and they're loud. If you don't give a shit about that and want something that will last 80k miles, there's a tire for that too. I just (probably wrongfully) assumed that you wanted a tire that could perform since you're looking for a "summer" tire.

Not to be a dick but you should try doing some research for yourself instead of letting us spoon feed you every step of the way.

I don't have any personal experience with General tires, but I wouldn't buy them either. If memory serves me right, they used to be known for making a subpar tire in all categories. I'm sure they've stepped up their quality in recent years, but that old "cheaply made" issue is burned in my head. Hopefully someone will chime in that has the same tire you're looking at and give some driving feedback. FYI too, the model tire you're looking at is not a summer tire. It's an UHP all-season tire. If you haven't already done so, check out Tire Rack's website for great information and research.

Yes, OP, that is all you need for a full summer setup. Like others said, I suggest a different tire though, especially since you're only using this setup for summer. For a few bucks more you can get the previously mentioned Hankook V12 or Nitto Invo. If you want a really nice summer tire with a lot of bang for your buck the Continental Extreme Contact DW is only $20/tire more than those Generals. The DW typically tests as comparable to significantly higher priced max performance summer tires. I also recommend the certificates for free replacement just in case one of your tires is damaged.

On the Continental DW reference. OP, I did tons of research on summer tires recently and just bought the Conti's (245/40/18 size though) a few days ago. I've never owned them before, but based on what I read about them and how they tested, I decided to give them a shot.

Get the lightest weight set up that you can afford. Check out the Kosei K4R. 14.8 LBS for the 17x8 and I think that they would look great on the TL.

They are 50mm offset. Not that 1/4" will casue any problems, but why push the wheel back into the opening.

Also, although he mentioned a summer setup, the General tires are A/S, so it's a setup for summer, or a summer tire setup.

Nitto makes a great product. The Invo has the coolest tread design out there IMO.

The Nitto Invo is a great tire. That's the only tire I strap to the IForged wheels on the Z06.

Certainly depends on the mileage you drive, but they don't have a very long wear indicator (UTOQ-260). If you drive 1000 miles per year they might last 12-20 years depending on the beating they see, but if you drive 20,000 miles a year, start looking for a replacement set.

They are made for a specific purpose, similar to the PS2 and PSS, great traction and handling, but if you're not into autocross or drive like a maniac, they are a waste of money.

I currently have 88k in 5year 3months. Which averages 17.6k per year.

Didn't notice I drove that much lol until now..

But with winter tires + summer tires hopefully I will get 2-3 years each set and I will be happy.

also - http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-c...read-wear.html looks like this is a good place to gauge tread life because I will never drive as hard as a vette. Looks like 20-30k. Good enough for me!

Your choice, but just remember that these tires are summer tires and can't, or shouldn't be used when the temps dip into the mid 30's.
Good luck

I realize that you have winter tires as that is what you had posted, but I don't do a winter tire install until I feel it's needed and use the A/S (Michelin/Chrome wheels) tire setup long after it turns 35. This isn't on the TL, but using this winter in Jersey as an example, I've never put the winter setup on our '08 knockaround car as it only snowed one day, but the temps at times were in the teens. Just don't like riding around with the winter tires when it's not necessary, but in your case they will be needed snow or no snow.
