difference between painting and refinishing rims?
I'm a little confused: what's the difference between having a body shop paint your wheels versus having a special wheel shop refinish and polish your wheels? I get them re-painted or completely redone aka polished? i just want gunmetal rims?
confused...
thanks,
eric

don't get them painted! go for powder coating, much more durable. im gonna redo my wheels next month, i'm going to have them powder coated. my first refinish was painted. has some chips already. sorry guys i just cant let go of the Mayas.
polished will be like chrome only not as shiny, would cost alot more than powder coating. if you want gunmetal, powder coat those puppies.

hm...probably the best idea. but if i do go ahead and powdercoat them, will they still have that gloss over them? or is that something i can just apply afterwards?
thanks man,

^ You can probably apply some layers of clearcoat.
How much does it cost to powercoat rims (in general)? I might want to do that to my GM Aspecs if the refinishing is crap quality again.
OP, if you get your rims repainted at a auto body shop, they will use normal clear coat, which apparently isn't as strong as clear coat thats meant to go on rims; hence will chip/flake easier under stress.
Seems like polishing is the easiest method... to do and to maintain. I wonder what color the Aspecs are underneath the paint.

Refinish means "to give a new surface". Could be painting, coating or polishing ect, its just not really specific to one method.
Current high quality auto paints work great on rims. Using a scratch resistant type 2K clear, hard curing ceramic type 2K clear ect will be very durable. Maybe not as durable as powder coating, but definitely durable enough for rims. If the prepping is done right, as coarse sanding as possible without sand scratches, and quality materials, should be no problem.
Clearing can be done when powder coating to achieve gloss. For example they can take the part out when hot/warm, clear powder coat, and go back into the oven.
