Current Best Factory Replacement Tires for '05 6MT?

Current Best Factory Replacement Tires for '05 6MT?

Hi all, seems most threads are about aftermarket wheels and whether larger tires fit so I'm hoping you'll forgive the common question. I came here years ago for great advice on the best tires to replace the stock ones and ended up with the Bridgestone Potenza 960s - are the POTENZA RE980AS the replacement for that? Never went with the Continentals, which are what about 50% of people seemed like like back then. b/c they seem to wear pretty quickly on our other cars. That said, I put about 5,000 miles/year on the car, at most. We get snow maybe twice a year (in NC). What should I get? Thanks!

tires are very subjective...
the best advice is to keep buying the same tire IF you liked it...
if you didnt like it, you could try the other million tires out there.

Thanks. They don't make that anymore, and I'm not interested in trying multiples!

My car is primarily summer use only so my next tire will be the General Gmax-RS Its a better version of the Firehawk Indy 500 and better in the rain from what articles say. Only about 130 each also

What are your requirements? Price? Ride quality? Flogging ability? Do you want a GT tire? A UHS? By your snow statement, it must be A/S capable. Opinions are all over the place on this. The favorites in the past couple of years have been the DWS06, Cinturato P7 AS+, RE980, G-MAX AS-05, Pilot Sports A/S 3+, P Zero AS+, to name a few. There are pros and cons of each of these depending on what is important to you. I think there a handful of new tires since the last big tire thread, but overall, the majority of the tires have been discussed in the least year or so.

I personally am running P Zero AS+ on my '05 MT. They met my price point, performance/comfort requirements, and the only real CON was their winter performance which isn't critical to me since I have dedicated winters to deal with that
Priorities:
- Comfort
- Wet/Dry handling
- Price
- Noise

This was my short list when shopping last year. I baselined against the MXM4 since it was a known tire to me and I was overall pleased with it other than price. I didn't want anything worse than that and I compared heavily against the DWS06 since it was so well regarded and priced appropriately.

Thanks for this! Biggest requirements for me at handling, ride, and noise. I have been happy with the 960s, I was kind of thinking about the Michelin A/S 3+ this time.

If those are your prime requirements, I would take a REALLY hard look at the Pirelli Cinturato P7 AS+ tires; the're what I'm running my my 2006 TL and they are superior in pretty much every metric compared to the Bridgestones of the 2005-2006 era..

My reason to avoid the Cinturato was it tended to have poor wet braking scores compared to the competition. And keep in mind...."poor" depends on which test results you want to look at. I personally felt the P Zero AS+ had less trade offs. The one set of scores that were really bad in the wet had great scores for most everything else.


But again, everyone has their own opinions on which tire is the most bestest. I was on board with the Cinturato until I realized their performance scorings were worse than the MXM4 for dry and wet. Pretty sure we have hashed out the Cinturato, P Zero, DWS06, and AS-05 more than once in the past year or two. We all have our reasons for our decisions.

I have never driven on the 960s....just making a very general assumption here. I assume they are similar to what the Michelin Pilot Sport AS+ were like which for sure put more focus on handling/performance over noise and ride quality. I went from the EL42 to Pilot Sport AS+ to MXM4 to P Zero AS+. The Pilots were nice to drive on, added a bit more harshness to the ride quality, made more noise on certain road surfaces, and wore out waaaaaaaaaaaay too quickly. My experience with those pretty much ruined Michelin UHP tires for me. It was way too much of a battle getting the warranty claim dealt with on those for me to ever go back which is the only reason I avoided the A/S 3+. After buying a $1200 set of PS AS+, then spending another $600 on the MXM4 even after warranty discounts, I was pretty much done with tires in that price range and wanted to at least test the waters in the closer to $100-125 per tire range.

My take on the Cinturato vs. P-Zero in the wet thing is, given the tread width of the P7s is fully an inch wider than the P-Zeros (8.7" vs. 7.7" respectively which equates to 13% wider), the wider tire tends to hydroplane a bit. I'll happily give up on some wet traction (which by the way is VERY good) for a little extra width. On top of that, the Cinturato's have a significantly longer estimated tread life (700 vs. 500 for the P-Zeros); I call that a win.

Interesting. I just stuck 4 A/S 3+ on my car last week. So far so good but I generally just drive highway to from work. On the car and out the door for just under $600 was the right price for my 14 year old daily driver. Costco was doing $70 offf of 4 plus penny installation. They all have date codes within the last 6 mos as well.

If you like the 960's then any modern tire will be as good if not better than the 960's. I had them on my 3G and upgraded to the DWS, then the DWS06 from continental. Tires aren't as sporty in the corners as the 960's but traction and grip are way better (mushy sidewall with the DWS, better on the 06). Wet weather is a HUGE improvement and snow performance is GREAT.

The Pirelli P7 sounds like it'd check off all the boxes you are looking for for a good All season tire! IT comes factory on 3-series in runflat favor it's that good.

If you only drive in the summer, your best bet is the Michelin 4S or Continental Extreme Contact Sport summer tire.

I have the Conti Sport's on my 4G and cannot wipe the smile off my face in twisty bends! IT comes with a 30K mile warranty too!

If you are finding you are not getting the mileage from tires that are stated, the tires are not being warmed up fully before use or there is another underlying issue. For example on my 760 I tore through Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 2+ within 12K miles. The tires were getting too hot from the loads exerted on them and got chewed up. Continental DW did not on the other hand! Neither did the Khumo Ecta's I had on there.

I went with Goodyear Assurance WeatherReady. I wanted GT tires. Chicago weather, and don't have space to store two sets of wheels, so I picked this one up last year. Quite enough. It handles snow and rain very well.
