There is no "best" it all will depend on what you want them to do and your $$. Any winter is better than an all season .. I have had good luck with some really low $$ tires .. a lot depends too on your winter driving ability. Your foot and your brain have to be hooked together. I run Dunlop Graspic .

Winter tires and a tire store. Did that help?

Seriously, there are plenty of threads out there covering tires. Telling me "Toronto winter" doesn't help either considering I have never been to Toronto. Define break my bank? Are you buying additional rims or swapping tires on existing rims? Do you drive mostly highway or city? Do you deal with ice or mostly snow? Is the snow hard pack or soft pack? Do you expect performance in the dry or just snow/ice?

It will be mostly city driving on weekdays and highway on weekends. I am going to buy regular 17 stelees as I heard horror stories about when a tire is changed on the original rim each season. Breaking bank meaning something mid range(not cheap , not expensive ).

And toronto winter has just about everything . Snow, slush, freezing rain, all depends on the each season lol as you may have heard we had to call an army to help clean the snow one of the winter season

I have followed this topic for a couple years now but not aggressively pursued purchasing winter tires. Everyone seems to rave about the Nokian Hakkapeliitta winter lineup. Do some research.

Just know this, you will not objectively determine what the best winter tire is. It's better to gather information on bad winter tires and avoid those rather than try to determine the best winter tire.

General Altimax Arctic

had them for 1 season on a 3G base and wow, they were unstoppable.

not really known for high performance winters..but if you don't want to be stuck... go for these.

always priced very low at Canadian tire for us Canadians.

Last season I put these on my car as well and drove to vermont the next day, in snow. No problem at all - traction all the way!

I run Achilles snow tires on my XXR's in the winter and they are fantastic in light snow.

Thanks for all the responses!
I basically narrowed down to these 3 choices mind you winter tire for (235 45 17s) are damn expensive if you don't want to go for house brand:
Altimax Arctic
Hankook W606 Icept
Dunlop Graphix DS3

Now need to decide which ones to go for, what do you guys say?
