I moved your post and created a new thread as that was one from back in 2005! The best tires depend on how much you want to spend, the conditions your drive in, how you want the car to ride and how long you want them to last.

For Example
Best tires if you drive only in dry condition -> Race slicks (no wet traction, short life, a lot of grip, no comfort)

Best tires if you drive in Snow ONLY -> dedicated studdable tires for snow

Best tires if you drive in mixed conditions of Snow, wet and dry -> Ultra High Performance All-Season

and so on

Performance? You'd have to go with Summer tires. Specifically, max performance Summer tires. What's your budget? If no budget, two of the best are:
