Best tire option/alternate size for 05 TL

What other sizes (wider if possible) would work with no issue and what tire would you recommend? I want good handling but dont want to give up a quiet ride to get it.

You could go to a 245/45R17.... They are marginally wider and speedo difference is 8/10 of a mile per hour.

What kind of tire are you looking for? High Performance All-Season? Ultra-High Performance All-Season? Grand Touring? Max Performance?

I looked at three separate tires when I upgraded to 18" wheels..... Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, Pirelli Pzero Nero M/S, and Yokohama AVS dB S2's..... I chose the Neros because they were close to the Pilots in performance and were $90 cheaper per tire. Others on the board also have been recommending Falken Ziex ZE-512's and Toyo Proxy 4's.

Which ever tire you choose, you are going to be happy because anything is better than the EL-42's.

Thanks. With 100 miles on my car i am pretty certain i could get something done just by calling my bridgestone dealer. I have a pretty decent relationship with them from the past so i may try that route before shelling out 500 beans. Mainly looking for high performance but something that wont wear down in 15k.

Sounds good. I'd resist getting the RE030's, as they aren't much of an improvement.... Make sure you select a BS dealer that isn't a franchise, as they can't give you as much assistance (price wise) with a trade as a corporate store could.

In the BS family, there are several choices....

EL-42 - Standard Touring All-Season
LS-Z - Grand Touring All-Season (quieter and more predictable than the EL's, but suffer flatspotting similiar to the EL's)
RE750 - Ultra-High Performance Summer tire
Potenza RE-050A - Max Performance Summer tire
Potenza S-03 Pole Position - Max Performance Summer tire

I don't know much about BS performance tires, so drop over to Tire Rack and check 'em out. Good luck!

pole position tires

I had set of pole position tires on my car and that made quite a difference over the michelins. I notice the 225 17 45s would corner better and had superior grip compared to the michelin 215 17 50s. They were even cheaper...

Now... winter comes and that's another deal. I got a tire/wheel package from tirerack. 60 series Blizzaks on 16in rims complete with lug nuts. The only thing that I minded was driving on the clean roads in the winter. You had to keep in mind you have blizzaks on the car. You could not aggressively change lanes at 75 mph or have as much confidence when braking hard. You could easily smoke the tires as well which would end of life your tires pretty quick.

So thanksgiving weekend the snow went on and April 1st the pole positions would be on. This set up was fine for about two years (I drive 20K per year). Then you have to start looking at new shoes....
