The 18" wheels would call for a 245/40-18 tire.

Depending on the width of the 18" rim - you can go to 255/40 R18. I did

Just to name a few. I can't speak about how good the prices or customer service is though.

Well, he said OE 18" so that would probably be a 8" width as the old A Specs of 8.5" are hard to come by, and the 255/40-18's call for a 9" minimum width with most manufacturer's specs, so we'll leave it at 245/40-18. Just an FYI, those 255/40-18 come in at 26" tall, some big mama's and can't imagine how they look on the TL at that height.

I had 255/40 R17 on my 04 OEM rims based on this thread - https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...light=255%2F40
I believe the OEM stock rims are 8.0" and I know there is even one AZiner who when to 265/40. So the 255 width will definitely fit, but understand it may not be for everyone.

In terms of the 26", while you are correct, what you need to remember is the OEM size from the factory is 25.3" with a sidewall height of 4.16". Going to the 255/40 18, the sidewall height is 4.01" and for the 245/40 18, the overall height is 25.71" with a sidewall height of 3.85". There is not a huge difference amongst any of these sizes. With the 245/40 you have the smallest sidewall (again not huge difference) but will translate to the harshest ride of the three.
All depends on what you are looking to do and what you are after - looks vs. ride quality vs. rubber on the road.
As an aside, I am running 245/45 17 dedicated snows on my Type S "waffle rims."
So there are lots of options, I was just letting the OP know 255/40 will fit/work.

17" wheels 235/45/17
18" wheels 245/40/18
19" wheels 235/35/19 or 245/35/19
I have had all these tires sizes before.
Right now I am on 235/35/19"

Define "best" size. Best for performance is the widest you can fit on your rims. For 8" rims, a 255 will fit easily with no issues. I've run 255s on my stock 8" rims for 70,000 miles now.

Keep in mind that the type of tire is much more important for performance than a 245 vs 255. A narrower tire with a softer compound is much more important that that extra 10m of width. Combine the additional width with a soft compound and you have a winner.

Sidewall height only partially dictates ride harshness. Again, type of tire has a huge effect on ride and performance. Contrary to popular belief, a super short sidewall is not better for performance. A stiff sidewall doesn't always mean the tire is less likely to deform or give better performance. I've had tires with very stiff sidewalls that have nowhere near the turn-in crispness of my current tires.

But again, for performance, run a 255 and whatever sidewall gives you the desired height. I love the look of a 255 on the TL.

First, you can stuff just about any tire size, large or small on a wheel width, but the recommended tire size for the specific wheel width is what makes a difference, therefore I never recommend a wider or smaller than recommended size(s) on a wheel. Do people stretch tires or go much wider than the recommended size, yes, does it make it correct, no.

To use your words, first you must remember that the OE Michelin was created specifically for the TL using Acura/Honda specs and stood 25.6" tall, not the 25.3" that was stated. This is why the 245/45-17 and 245/40/18 look so good on the TL as the height is almost perfect to the OE tires while the aftermarket tires at 25.3" are small when new and grow smaller after usage.

Also, your scenario about the harsh ride with the various tires sizes lies more in the tire construction, load and speed rating as most 255/40-18 comes with a 99XL (6836# capacity/Extra Load) rating and will surely have more carcass strength than the OE 93W Michelin. With the 6836# capacity you certainly won't need to be concerned with how many passengers you fit into the car, or how much weight can be placed in the truck.

As far a rubber on the road that is definitely a spec one needs to view before a tire purchase and you will find that a 255 tire can have a lesser tread width than a 245.

The list of tires is long so hopefully the OP will get the tires that benefit him the most.

Turbonut - I don't necessarily disagree with you and agree with everything IHC mentioned. You had made mention about the 255/40 18 being 26", being some big mama's and can't imagine how they look on the TL at that height. However you then mention the OE size is actually larger than what I quoted putting it even closer to the 26" you previously mentioned. I guess I'm a little confused as to which direction/what point you were trying to make. No worries either way.
At the end of the day the tire size selection will have to be made by the OP and as IHC said "best" is subjective and will vary from car owner to car owner.

Just to clear up the subject or confusion as tire size and manufacturer is certainly subjective, but I can tell if an aftermarket 235/45-17 is on the TL as it looks small and is only .3" less in diameter, so the reversal also holds true in that a tire that stands at 26" looks too tall to my eye. As far as the 255/40-17 on the TL I've said my piece on the thread in that at 25" they are only slightly taller than a temporary spare, so the choice is up to the owner, small roller skates, tall truck tires or somewhere in-between, but that's my stance.

I went with a 235/40/18 on 18x8

Are you stock height / springs / coils / dumped ?? That would also matter, at least to me.

I'm completely OEM stock, but have the 8.5" A-Spec rims. Just ordered new Michelin Pilot Super Sports - 255/40 R18 99Y.

Nice RJs, by the way. My favorites were the Inspyres

I'm on 8.5" A-specs as well with A-spec suspension, I had 265/35s (Dunlop S8000)which I thought looked really good from front or rear but a little too much fender gap. I now have General exclaim 245/40s which look better from the side, but they look really narrow on the 8.5" rim. Maybe 255/40 next time?

I went with 245/45-17 on mine and I have absolutely no regrets. The tires are the PERFECT size and it's surprising how much they make the car look better, too. I decided to go with this size over the 255/40-17's because I drive so much. I'm moving closer to work in a few months and won't be driving quite as much and may switch to 255/40-17's. I haven't decided yet.
