Bent Wheel... NOOOOO!!!!

Whaddup?

Well, during a brake job last Thursday night, I starting to through my wheels on the balancer in anticipation for a road trip to OBX this past weekend. To my shock, one of them was bent, badly. Of course, I have the 8.5's which are somewhat hard to find. A second was a little bad also. After we were done, I drove it on the highway for a little test, and it shook like MJ Fox's hands at speeds from 65-80. After that it smoothed out perfecly up to 100mph.

So, I took the car to my Man Mohammed at Mr. Tire, who proceeded to Road Force balance all four wheels. He put the crappy wheels in the back (and added a total of 4.25oz weight on the bad one!!). The result? $19.99 spent, and the car drives like its brand new... I even hit 120 on the way home in secluded NC, and it was like I was going 80.

GAWD I love my TL...

If it gets bad again, there may be some black chrome Aspec's in my future.

Why don't you just get the bends taken out? I know locally here in Jax we have a Wheel Doctor who takes out bends. Perhaps there is a place in your town that repairs rims. I don't know if I would drive 120mph on bent rims. What if you were to have a blow out?

Did Mohammed know about the damage? I doubt he would/should allow you to leave if he knew you had a bent up rim(s). I dont want to think of the seconds following a blow out in that scenario. Good luck with all that :/

a minor bend that balances out should be fine, but if its a bad bend, i would def get it fixed for the blowout reason

Hi Everyone,

I totally understand the concern.

I admit I may have been a bit dramatic. It wasn't a "bad" bend (or dent). It was like it was a little warped. It just shocked me, because I hadn't hit anything, and wasn't sure how it happened.

Mo said that it may have even been like that prior to my purchase in Aug 2009. But, he balanced it out and said it was perfectly safe and it should be fine. I asked about wheel doctor, and He said that usually with a "warp" type bend, coupled with the fact that the wheels are aluminum, make it unrepairable.

Any advice/experience here?

Side note... My buddy had a E55 with 20" HRE's. He hit a pot hole last winter. Now THAT was a bad bend. Wheel doctor couldn't straighten it out. $1K+ rim out the door. Shame for sure...
