appropriate speed rating and size for Falken 512?

Is the speed rating for this tire Z or W? What size does it read on the sidewall? I am ordering mine from Sears and the representative said it will be a W speed rating instead of Z. The size I'm ordering will be 235/45R17.

If you want a Z rating, go with the ST115. Lots of positive comments on this forum about it. Very quiet tire. Special order from Sears, $113. Or $93 plus shipping from Discountiredirect.com

Yep, he's right. Falkentire.com lists both the 512's and 115's as Z-rated (in size 235/45/17). Sears lists the 512's as ZR, but then when you click on the specs, it says W.

This information below is from Tire Rack and might help explain how the W and Z ratings are applied. As you can see, a W rated tire is good for speeds up to 168, while a Z rated tire is rated for speeds over 149, which naturally raises the question of how much over 149 mph. So a W rated tire could be higher rated or lower rated than a Z rated tire but there is no way of knowing, but we do know the W tire's speed capabilities.

W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.

225/50ZR16 in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h

205/45ZR17 88W 168 mph, 270 km/h

285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h
