Question Anyone running 225/50/17 on TLS?

Can't wait to get rid of the Michellins! I'm looking at a set of Turanzas ls-v. I need an all season tire. How will the 225/50/17 ride differ from the stock size 215/50/17? I know its a slightly wider tire, should I have a concern for rubbing problems? Any other insight/opinions would be helpful.

Thanks,

Bassman

If you use the tire size calculator over at 1010tires.com:

Speedometer Difference: 1.528% too slow Diameter Difference: 1.51%

The bigger tire (225) will give you a false reading on your speedometer (too slow).

Rubbing shouldn't be a problem. 225 is probably the limit as to how wide a tire that can fit on TL-S OEM rims (6.5").

However, you might want to consider what others find quite popular on this site, staying true to OEM size tires (215/50/17):

1) Sumitomo HTR+
2) Continental ContiExtremeContact
3) Yokohama V4S -- new tire ... good specs.

Hope that helps.

225 on tl-s rim

I'am currently running a 235/45/17 on my car with no problems. My speedo is correct and i have no problem with rubbing. I had 225/45 and decided to go with a wider set and sofar, i'am completly happy with it's handling.

Hi-

My OEM Mich Pilots have a sidewall bubble at 27K.
I find them stiff and loud.
I would like something in 225/50/17 but not sure what brand does better than
the Pilots.

Thus far I found the Goodyears rs-a 225/50/17 a fair price and overall ratings from web sites seem to put it close to or a bit better than the Pilots.

Quesiton.

Will the 225/50/17 fit OK?
I know about the speedo difference and am fine with that..I'm worried if they'll stay
in balance?
Second, will they ride any better, noise and comfort?

I basically just drive my TL-S like an old man...nothing fancy...the occasional fast
corner but mostly fast on highways.

Any suggestions on brands, considering $$, and sizes would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

225/50/17 is actually MORE correct than stock.

The original TL came with wheels that were 25.68 inches in diameter.

I highly doubt they recalibrated the Type S for the sake of a 25.5 inch tire.

So I'd put money that 25.68 inches is actually what the speedo is calibrated to.

I just had all four 225/50 17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S mounted on my stock TL-S rims last Friday. They fit with no problem and no rubbing with the Comptech drop. They actually ride much smoother and quiter than the OEM Michelins. Got a little over 30,000 on the OEMs.

Also had the Rotora slotted rotors and AXXIS deluxe plus pads installed at the same time.

Car now handles and brakes much better.

Question

What affect does the larger diameter of the 225/50/17 have on acceleration? Is it measurable? If so, would it only be noticable at the track, or is it something that someone might actually feel?

There shouldn't be much difference in acceleration. The diameter difference is 1.51%.

Stock 215/70/17- 25.46 in.

225/70/17- 25.85 in.

215/50/17 is roughly 25.5 inches

225/50/17 is roughly 25.7 inches

sizes can vary with manufacturer as much as 0.2 inches

put it this way, you'll fell a 1 psi change in tire pressure more than you would a diameter difference of 0.2 inches :-)

The wider 225/50/17 will be heavier, create more traction, and will therefore slower during acceleration runs.
