Anyone with Avon M550 tires?
I'm thinking about getting some Avon M550 tires. They were ranked #1 by TireRack
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....0+A%2FS#Survey
Has anyone else here had experience with them? I'm just looking for some personal recent reviews I can trust.
I called Acura and they are raping me on the cost. They want $134/tire and $130 for install. The total cost comes to $666 (no joke).
I can order from Tire Rack and have them installed at Firestone for $553.
Thanks for you time...

They are what I am going to get when the el42's wear out.
I will shop around localy and see about the price, some places match he tirerack price. I may also spring for the hunter road force balance as I like a smooth car...

Got them about 500 miles ago when my p.o.s Falkens wore out, excellent price and I think they are 10x's better then the Falkens I had when in the snow, but of course you loose some on the cornering, but I'll take that anyday for the 550's snow traction. Also excellent price!

quality over time
The reviews on tirerack for the Avon tend to be very favourable when the tires are new but excitement fades once you get into the 15-20k range. Anybody here with high mileage experience? I am concerned that saving maybe 30-40% over other tires, but having a great tire for only 1/2 of the tread life, might not be such a great deal.
Avon used to be a very respected race tire company. They were bought by Cooper tires several years ago and their business strategy probably changed (that's speculation on my side).

I do not know of any tire that people are happy with when they get 20,000 miles on them. The tread depth is important for wet and snow traction, and if you get to half of the new tread depth, the tires are bound to suck.
I tend to replace tires when they get half worn, how can you expect a tire to perform when you are into the wear bars?
I suspect that is why almost everyone on tire rack loves their new tires, they have to be better than worn out ones.
