255-40-17
I was at Discount Tire yesterday and told them I wanted to put on 255-40-17 tires and he said that would be a big mistake because of the "bow effect" that would be generated by putting these tire on the OEM wheels (i.e. they were not wide enough). I know there are some users here that have that kind of setup so I know it can be done but is this guy giving me a fair warning or is he talking out of his _ss.

Be warned that I am the person that started the thread linked above. So, I am biased. I am the one that instigated the 255/40-17 modification.
It is my opinion that any tire installer/seller should warned a person that they are attempting to mount a NON-factory recommend tire to their vehicle. Also, the tire installer/seller should warned a person when a tire is NOT recommended to fit a certain rim size.
I am in favor of these warnings. But, that is the extent of it.. just warnings. I am against someone DICTATING to me that I can NOT do something.
In conclusion, I would recommend that you tell the tire person "thank you for the warning and I are AWARE that it is not recommend, BUT I wish to proceed with the purchase and installation."
