225/45/17 vs. 215/50/17 on 6.5
hello there.
i drove over to NTB to install 225/45/17 sumi HTR+ on my stock TLS rims after speaking to a few of the forum members who have done the switch from 215/50 to 225/45.
they wouldnt do the tire change due to the fact that there is a discrepancy in spec between the tire size (225/45) and the wheel size (6.5). i respect that there is a safety aspect involved since i am driving a potential hazard.
this is a bit frustrating... some questions if someone wouldnt mind answering ....
1. is there even a visual difference or performance difference between a 215/50 and a 225/45 tire???
2. why the heck did acura give the TLS 6.5 inch rims and the CLS 7.0 inch rims?
3. i will be lowering my car with HR sports so maybe using the fatter 215/50 is not a bad idea since that will help dampen the lowered ride. am i correct to assume that a lower profile tire coupled with lowering springs will make the ride a lot less luxury.
hate to keep asking questions and not offering any answers.

I was thinking about a set of 225 45 R17s also and was wondering about similiar questions. I have no confirmation on this, but I would think the 225/45 would be equivilent to the dimensions of a 215/50.
I haven't shopped around too much yet, but I'll post again if I find more info.
By the way, doesn't anyone have experiences with the ContiSport Contact IIs?

just like any other product, there is a + or - margin of error. but, the tire books that tire stores use for reference do not even mention the 225/45s on the outer perimeters for the 6.5 rim. which may mean that the tire size is way off.
i was all set until the guy at NTB started talking tech about rim size and safety and blowouts and heat and stretching etc.....
needless to say, i may be back to 215/50 since i am not a car mechanic and cant take the chance.
