2 Stock Tires and 2 New Snow Tires. Good idea?

I have a sidewall GASH in my front right tire and I am trying to find out a couple things.
1) Can I get just two tires and replace just the front tires (front wheel drive)?

2.) I am in Boston. Winters are bad here. Which all season tires should I consider?
I hear the pirelli zero nero and the nokians are good.

Please help me!

I have done that before w/ my car. I would suggest to put the newer tires in the rear.

1) It depends on how much tread you've lost. I think you can do that, and only rotate them in the future from front to back and not rotate them. Last time I was in your situation, the tires had enough miles on them where I just said screw it and replaced all four (they had plenty of tread left, but I felt OK with it).

2) I can't comment on the Nero's for snow use, but I've read GREAT things about the Nokians on this forum and other brand car forums as well. They would be one of my top choices, they are just hard to find in my area... only a few small shops carry them. I've also heard good things about Conti Extremes as well (not anywhere near Nokians). If you get good snow I'd consider the Nokians or a true winter tire.

We haven't gotten jack for snow in Chicago for many many years... so I've gotten by with my A/S's, but I may regret it some year???

Put newer tires in the front. These are not only your steering but also your drive tires.

Can also check out Tire Rack where customers and the rack people rate the tires you may be interested in.

do not mix tires with different ratings! The car will behave irratically.

Imaging driving in snow and have plenty of traction in front and poor in back... what do you think it will happen when you make a turn?

oversteer baby!

Buy yourself a couple of PZero Neros M+S's right now and replace the other 2 when they are worn. But do not put snow in front and A/S in back.
